LG Optimus 3D Max Spotted at FCC on the Way to AT&T?

It looks like the AT&T Thrill 4G–the carrier’s variant of the original LG Optimus 3D–may soon be getting a successor in the form of the LG Optimus 3D Max. The 3D Max was recently spotted getting U.S. regulatory approval at the FCC and may be destined to AT&T.

The new Optimus 3D Max was announced by LG at Mobile World Congress. On the hardware side, it seems that the device is very similar to the original Optimus 3D with the same glasses-free 4.3-inch WVGA screen (the HTC EVO 3D bests the display with a qHD resolution) and a slightly improved 1.2 GHz dual-core processor. The device is lighter and thinner than the original, however, but given the modest specs improvement, it may be targeted at users who are entirely new to the 3D smartphone space rather than original Thrill 4G owners who may be looking for an upgrade.

The FCC filing, uncovered by pocketnow, mentions that the phone will support 4G HSPA+ on AT&T’s network. The filing did not indicate if the phone will support AT&T’s newer 4G LTE network. HSPA+ is said to be up to four times faster than 3G and LTE can deliver speeds up to ten times faster than 3G, according to AT&T.

The device retains the dual-5-megapixel rear cameras from the original. It’s unclear if AT&T would launch the device under its Thrill moniker or if it will keep LG’s international Optimus branding this time around.

Though the device was spotted at the FCC, it does not necessarily mean that AT&T would launch the phone if approved.
