LG Optimus Vu and Samsung Galaxy Note Pictured Together

Though still a niche product with its 5.3-inch screen, the Galaxy Note is making a big splash in the mobile smartphone and tablet world and the AT&T 4G LTE edition is receiving a huge marketing push in the U.S. ahead of launch with a recent Super Bowl commercial. It seems that LG is not one to let its South Korean rival get away with all the fame and LG is offering a Samsung challenger in the form of the LG Optimus Vu, which bears a 5-inch display.

The Optimus Vu had been leaked before, and now we’re seeing the LG Optimus Vu pictured next to the Samsung Galaxy Note in a picture.

The main visual difference at first glance between the two devices is that the LG Optimus Vu has a wider display in portrait mode thanks to LG utilizing a 4:3 aspect ratio compared to the narrower screen in portrait orientation on the Samsung Galaxy Note as that device has a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio in landscape orientation. The 4:3 aspect ratio won’t be as nice for widescreen movie playback, but may be better for those who view documents and PDFs on their devices, look at pictures, or read e-books or digital magazines.

As the screen is wider on the LG Optimus Vu in portrait orientation, and due to the device’s larger 5-inch screen, it will be difficult for users to maneuver the device in one-handed use.

Additionally, it seems that unlike the Galaxy Note, LG did not opt to include or make a digitizing stylus for use on the Optimus Vu. The digital S Pen on the Galaxy Note is among the highly promoted feature of the Galaxy Note, which allows artists to have finer control when using the hybrid tablet-smartphone form factor device to draw. Users can also write and annotate documents, pictures, and create handwritten notes. What the S Pen does not do is convert handwritten text to typed text, like on Microsoft’s Tablet PCs.

The Optimus Vu is anticipated to be announced this month at Mobile World Congress.
