Microsoft Shifts Zune Gears from Zune Player to WP7

Published

on

I guess this shouldn’t really come as a surprise to anybody who has been paying attention. Bloomberg is reporting that Microsoft will stop releasing new versions of the Zune hardware. Instead the focus will move towards the Zune software on Windows Phone 7.

I’ve never had a Zune but quite a few folks I know love using them, especially after the last update in 2009. But then things change fast (or slowly depending on your perspective) in the mobile tech world.

If true, I have mixed feelings… on one hand, I LOVE my Zune, and I have been a fan of the hardware since the first generation. On the other hand, it makes perfect sense that they’d focus on one hardware platform in WP7, because well let’s face it… they NEED to focus on something to do it right.

That said, critics have said since the first generation that the Zune was dead without ever giving it a real shot, and here we are with it still around.

I have to say this is too bad. Big win for Apple, big loss for those who like choice. I have a creative Zen that I have been using for 5 years, but it is showing signs of slowing down. I have been surprised by the dearth of choices available (ie large storage capacity). May have to get one these just in case.

I’m assuming we’ll see 3rd party hardware options with WP7 software like the iPod Touch in AppleLand.

This is so stupid. the Zune and the xbox are the only 2 pieces of hardware that microsoft makes that anyone actually cares about. they put more into marketing that P.O.S Kin than they did the Zune HD which at the time was better than the 3’rd gen iPod touch. is 2 cameras shy of being better than the current iPod touch. is better than the iPod nano for the money. and only needed a open app store. this is a dumb move MSFT.

this is a dumb idea msft. if you had marketed the Zune HD like you marketed the Kin, windows vista, the Kinnect and windows 7. the Zune HD would have 35% marketshare as opposed to less than 10%.

They should release an Xbox Live portable competitor to the iPod Touch that runs WP7. The MP3 player is no longer the main selling point of the iPod Touch.
