MID + Dragon NaturallySpeaking= Great Mobile Writing Experience

Published

on

I’ve been very pleased with my Viliv S5 so far, but it can be difficult to write anything of length with its on-screen keyboard. I installed Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 to see if the MID was powerful enough to turn my speech into text. I was very impressed with the results and shot this video after just a few minutes of training.

I’m starting to do more and more computing with my voice. I’ve also installed Dragon on my 2730p and MacSpeech on my MacBook Pro. I just started using voice commands with my iPhone 3GS to dial numbers and play songs. I also talk a lot to my car to find points of interest, change radio stations, navigate and more.

Nuance either sells or licenses the voice recognition software behind all of my voice-enabled devices. The company is behind the voice capabilities of an incredible number of devices, including the Amazon Kindle DX.

I shot this video demo of how I type with my voice on the Viliv S5 for MIDStories.com. After a few minutes of training I was able to start blogging with my voice. It’s not perfect, but typing with my voice sure gets a lot of words on the page quickly.

I am REALLY surprised. I have to say that NUANCE Spanish vendors are not specially cooperative, because I have had tried a lot of times to know what is the bare minimum hardware configuration in order to run dragon.

As I readed in forums (an alternative to that lack of proper communication or information), atoms were below the bare minimum for dragon to run… but… LOOK AT THAT

Are you sure that you realiced totally the consequences of what you did with that viiv? Suddenly a keyboard is not so important!

    Congratulations!

Is this part of your Viliv S5 project from the many you got?

*Very* interesting. Did you have to tweak or modify the settings in order to get it to work so smoothly with the S5? Is this a hard-drive based unit, or does it have an SSD ?

I have a Dragon license, this makes me want to port it over to my S5.

Can you show a video interacting with various programs and menus (i.e. Firefox, IE8, Outlook, Start Menu) on the Viliv S5?

@HG, yes this is part of what we’re doing with all the Viliv’s we ordered. Check out https://www.midstories.com to see more of what we’re doing with these guys.

@borax99 This is the standard hard drive Viliv S5 config that’s available for $599. I haven’t tweaked anything at all. Just installed Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 via an external DVD drive, read it the training speech (JFK Inauguration I believe) and started using DragonPad.
I did get an alert that some Office menus won’t work because of the low specs, but the main purpose of Dragon on my Viliv was to make it so I could blog and write emails without having to resort to an external keyboard.

Forgot to mention, I did add the word “Viliv S5” to Dragon’s dictionary. You may have to add to the vocabulary to fit your speech/writing patterns, but it does recognize GHz, TB,GB, etc. out of the box.

I mentioned this on iPhoneJD the other day: I’m waiting for Dragon NS for iPhone. Am I dreaming?

Charles, I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if there was a more robust iPhone app for voice control and voice recognition, but what we have now is incredibly basic- i.e. “play an album” & “call mom.”

What OS are you running? Is this the 1.33 Atom? I have DNS 10 on my Kohjinsha SC3 (1.33 Atom, 2GB RAM) running Windows 7 and it’s not as quick as yours seems to be, although it does work very well. I tried setting up a phone BT headset but it didn’t want to know. Works great with a USB set though.

@John, it has the 1.33Ghz Z520 Intel Atom processor. I’ve used both a Jabra BT headset and Ultimate Ears analog mobile phone headset that I normally use with my iPhone.

I am really, and pleasantly, surprised. DNS 10 on my more powerful (certainly more RAM) Dell Latitude XT suffered from lag. Now I’m beginning to wonder if the Snowflake USB microphone is the weak link. What do you think?
