Motion Being Aggressive in Wake of Apple Tablet Tsunami

Published

on

motionf5c5Give Motion Computing credit. They are at least trying to be aggressive in the wake of all the hype/rumors/buzz/genuflecting that is going on about the Apple Tablet.  There’s speculation that Apple is looking at it’s game changer as a vertical market device in addition to a consumer device and the medical profession has been mentioned often as a part of that.

Well, Motion has some tenderhooks into that market and isn’t going to let them go easily it appears. In a ComputerWorld article Motion’s Mike Stinson is quoted as saying that he doesn’t belive Apple’s Tablet will be strong or durable enough for use in medical facilities or other verticals like construction. He also says that medical professionals would prefer a stylus for entering data.

You have to give them credit for being out front.

Today marks the beginning of a lot of nasty turf wars.

Interesting that Motion is worried about physicians adopting the Apple tablet for EMR applications. Personally, I wouldn’t have given Apple any serious consideration for my office, and I doubt it would stand up to the rigours of hospital life (too many nasty bugs, fluids, and knocks…).

I’m sure that iPad will make inroads into the health sector courtesy of all the Apple fans out there and the mainstream press it will get. I can imagine that it will be a tool that doctors might adopt for medical libraries… But I don’t see it being an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) type device.

It would take many years for healthcare companies to retool all of thier EMR projects and software for a new OS anyway. Healthcare is rightly slow at adopting new tech – it is a matter of life and death after all.

You would also note that the iPad has a number of open ports and would not be good for infection control like the C5 is.

I would really like to replace my Motion LE1600 with a multi-touch capable J3400.

Is there ANY likelihood that Motion would incorporate multi-touch into upcoming pen-based slates?

The Lenovo x200 multi-touch TabletPC seems to be the next best thing until then.

I don’t see iPad going very far in vertical markets like healthcare or construction – for the reasons stated by Brett and tableenvy and more. iPad is clearly aimed at the consumer marketplace rather than business.
