Moto Nexus Speculation Heats Up With Trademark Filing

Published

on

Big companies like Samsung or Motorola often trademark names for smartphones and devices long before they ever see the light of day, even ones that never get used, and today we’re seeing a rather odd filing by Motorola. Just like the Samsung “Gear” trademark was found long before the Galaxy Gear Smartwatch was revealed, today we’re seeing something similar from Motorola.

According to some documents unearthed by Phandroid, Motorola has just been granted the trademark for a new device of some sort called the “Moto G.” At this point we really don’t have anything to go on, but there’s a few different options that immediately come to thought. One being an upcoming Moto smartwatch to compete with the Galaxy Gear, but a few other tipsters have a better idea. Talk of a Moto Nexus smartphone, or even something bigger.

We’ve heard talk of a Motorola Nexus before, which makes even more sense now that Google owns the hardware company. Famed tipster Taylor Wimberly confirmed a Motorola Nexus was in the works at one point, but we’ve heard nothing but details on the LG Nexus 5 since. So what does all this mean? It’s hard to say.

Motorola’s CEO Dennis Woodside promised a budget version of the Moto X would arrive after the initial launch, so that could be what we’re seeing here. Another idea is the Moto Nexus, with “G” hinting at Google’s part in the device. Not to mention original leaks suggested the Moto X would eventually arrive on the Google Play Store like the Galaxy S4 or HTC One as a Google edition, but that’s yet to happen.

The guys from Droid-Life have a different idea though, claiming once source mentioned the upcoming “Moto G” is a smartphone that will be headed to Verizon Wireless in the near future. Recent reports claim Motorola is working on a giant 6.3-inch Galaxy Note and HTC One Max rival, which we could see arrive as the Moto G, or the Motorola DROID Giant for Verizon.

It’s all just rumors for now, but once thing we do know is a Moto G device of some sort is in the works, and has been trademarked by Motorola.
