Moto X Android 4.4.4 KitKat Update Wraps Up in the U.S.

The Moto X Android 4.4.4 KitKat update has been moving at an incredible pace, beating most manufacturers to the latest Android update, and now we’ve learned the last remaining US owners are getting it too. While all carriers have already received the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update, the unlocked edition (mainly for T-Mobile) is up next.

After first issuing the Moto X Android 4.4.4 KitKat update to the Verizon Moto X, followed by AT&T and Sprint a few weeks later, those who bought the unlocked Moto X were sad to see they were still left on Android 4.4.3 KitKat.

In fact, most Moto X owners in the United States received Android 4.4.4 KitKat in August, leaving the unlocked edition nearly two months behind schedule. Typically unlocked devices see updates first, but that wasn’t the case this time around with the Moto X.

The original Moto X was initially released in August of 2013, and has been an extremely popular device given the vast array of customization options, nearly stock Android, and quick updates to the latest versions of Android. It was the first non Nexus device to receive the original Android 4.4 KitKat release, but since has struggled.

In June Google released two major Android updates. First to Android 4.4.3, then quickly followed with a bug fixing and security patch two weeks later to Android 4.4.4 KitKat. The Unlocked Moto X actually received Android 4.4.3 first, before all carriers, which is part of the reason for the delay.

AT&T and Verizon skipped Android 4.4.3 for the Moto X and went straight to Android 4.4.4 KitKat in order to receive all the new features, bug fixes, and the important security match we mentioned above. However, all of that already arrived for the unlocked model with Android 4.4.3 (except the security patch) so it makes sense that Motorola focused on carrier handsets first.

The Moto X never launched with T-Mobile, so this isn’t an update for the T-Mobile variant, but the unlocked Moto X was mostly purchased for those on T-Mobile who expected the flagship phone to arrive on their carrier. This year it has been replaced with the “Pure Edition” which is essentially the same thing.

The unlocked Moto X already received the new dialer changes, improved camera and gallery apps, and everything else the other Moto X owners have been enjoying since August, so this is a relatively small update.

If you’re the owner of an unlocked Moto X (on T-Mobile, AT&T, or another GSM carrier) expect an update to Android 4.4.4 KitKat to arrive starting today. As usual, these updates are staged and may not arrive for all users today, but should complete before the end of the week.

There is no changelog yet regarding what to expect, but given the unlocked Moto X already has all the new features the others are enjoying, this is likely just the small bump from Android 4.4.3 to Android 4.4.4 in order to patch the security issues we’ve mentioned above.

We’ll be on the lookout for more details and a changelog, but in the meantime owners can head to settings > about phone > check for updates and pull down the latest Android 4.4.4 KitKat update for the Moto X.
