Moto X Android 5.1 Lollipop Update Emerges

Published

on

Late last month we finally received some details about the highly anticipated Android 5.1 Lollipop update for multiple Motorola phones, including the Moto X. And this is for both the 1st and 2nd Gen Moto X. While users in the United States are still waiting for it to arrive, today we can confirm it’s in the final testing phase, a “soak test” for other regions and should start rolling out as soon as next week.

Since the first release of Android 5.0 Lollipop back in October users from all manufacturers have been waiting for it to arrive. Motorola was one of the first to deliver it for the 2nd Gen Moto X from 2014, and those with the original have been stuck waiting for months. However, we finally have some good news.

Those with the original Moto X from 2013 haven’t been forgotten, and the newer 2nd Gen Moto X from last year is also expected to see Android 5.1 Lollipop soon. Today a Motorola employee shared all the details on Google+, which we’ll go over after the break.

Over the past few months we’ve seen almost all major manufacturers from Samsung, LG, HTC and Motorola update most new phones to Android 5.0 Lollipop, but sadly the update had quite a few small problems and bugs. In fact, Google quickly released Android 5.0.1, 5.0.2, and then a major Android 5.1 update with bug fixes. And now Nexus devices are even running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, likely the final version until Android M arrives in the fall.

Those with the 1st and 2nd Gen Moto X will be happy to know that many of the problems or bugs in Android 5.0 Lollipop have been addressed, and both smartphones should begin seeing an upgrade to Android 5.1 Lollipop as soon as early next week if all goes well.

David Schuster, an employee at Motorola who’s been sharing details on Google+ posted today and announced a global soak test, or final testing phase before an actual release to the public, has started today for both versions of the Moto X. And while a soak test isn’t under way in the United States, US carriers should be up next.

Here is everything this particular Motorola employee had to say about the 2013 and 2014 Moto X Android 5.1 Lollipop update.

“We started soak test today for Moto X (2nd Gen) for the following retail channels:
Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Singapore and Sweden
We started soak test today for Moto X (1st Gen) for the following retail channels:
Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Australia, Hong Kong, India, Kuwait, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and United Arab Emirates.

If all goes well we would expect full deployments to start next week.

Currently North America isn’t listed for either device, but that’s most likely because carriers add a few more days or weeks worth of testing of their own, then do a final testing phase and typically push updates out within 3-5 days of the soak test.

David confirms that if all goes well, full deployment of Android 5.1 Lollipop for both versions of the Moto X will start next week. This doesn’t mean US carriers will push it out next week as well, but it’s highly likely that we’ll see some movement before the end of June.

A few weeks ago this same source confirmed the update is in a number of carrier labs for testing, which means a soak test from Verizon, AT&T and others could start later this week or early next week, and updates begin within the next few weeks. We’ll be sure to keep an eye out for more details regarding the Moto X Android 5.1 Lollipop update, most notably in the United States, and update once we know more.

is it working? because my phone is totally messed up… texts take 15 minutes just to be sent, cant update apps, barely can make phone calls : ( had to restart the phone a few times. I cant roll back and my phone is useless like this. I removed all 3rd party apps and cleared up as much data as possible. You have any suggestions?

I updated my phone yesterday & it has been horrible- text messages are not being sent & received, apps are not working, battery life is completely drained when I never had that issue previously.

I’ve been having the same issues with my phone. Another issue is that the Google Play Services isn’t updating, nor are any other apps.

Fixed the battery drain problem by removing 2 apps that using too much of the battery in Lollipop. They were okay in KitKat, but not in the new Lollipop. Phone is now working fine. Go to Settings —Battery to find offending apps.

I had to reset my phone. Now it’s ok. But I’m still disappointed with Motorola.

Same here, did the update on my 1st gen Moto X and everything is screwed up. Texts from yesterday morning finally came in at 10:45 p.m. last night, phone is constantly hot after charging even when all apps appear closed, did not have an alarm past two days because a full battery died in 5 hours. I did not ask for bright, pretty colors on my screens, I think that should have been my option to change, the contrast between bright blue and white is hard on my eyes. How can I uninstall this update?

Updated my moto x (1st gen) to Android 5.1 OTA from Motorola. Phone was purchased directly from Motorola. I loved the phone. This release has made my phone almost unusable:
    1. Runs very, very hot
    2. Battery runs downs very quickly. Takes forever to charge. I was only able to charge it fully by turning it off and charging overnight. Keeping the phone on while charging causes it to charge about 5% each hour.

Unacceptable. Don’t know what to do.

Got the 5.1 update for the 2nd gen Moto X. A bunch of bugs noticed already- brightness not decreasing after about the halfway mark, so i had to install a third-party brightness control app (Lux). Also, i’m not able to delete some messages and message threads from the Messaging app, however when i change the default sms app to Hangouts, i can. Weird.

The max volume for alarms also seems to have been tuned down.

Thinking of buying a used Moto X first Gen phone. Have most if not all of these problems been fixed? And is the camera all that bad?
