Motorola Atrix, Atrix 2 & Photon 4G Ice Cream Sandwich Updates Get Grim News

Published

on

The Motorola Droid Bionic wasn’t the only device that received some bad Ice Cream Sandwich news from Motorola. In addition, owners of the Motorola Atrix 4G, Atrix 2 and Photon 4G were delivered some bad news when Motorola updated its Ice Cream Sandwich timeline.

Over the weekend, Motorola updated its Ice Cream Sandwich update timeline to reflect the latest information the company has in regards to the ICS updates for various devices.

The change saw the Droid Bionic Ice Cream Sandwich update postponed until Q4 and the Droid Xyboard 8.2 ICS update delayed until O4 as well. Both updates were originally supposed to be out in the third quarter but now will be out sometime in October, November or December.

The Atrix, Atrix 2, and Photon 4G ICS updates could be in jeopardy.

In addition to the news regarding the Droid Xyboard 8.2 update and the Droid Bionic ICS delay, owners of Motorola’s Photon 4G, and Atrix 4G and Atrix 2 all got updates as well, though, the news is much more grim.

Instead of offering a date for the Ice Cream Sandwich updates for those devices, Motorola instead says that “further plans” are coming soon for owners.

Originally, the Atrix and Atrix 2 were to get Ice Cream Sandwich in Q3, which includes July, August and September, while the Photon 4G was slated to get ICS in Q4 of this year.

All three devices now are listed with the moniker “Further plans coming soon.”

What this means for the trio of devices is unclear. It’s possible that they will get dates attached to them in the future though we don’t understand why Motorola wouldn’t have just done that over the weekend.

However, it’s also possible that we may see a delay into 2013 or worse yet, cancellations. Motorola has had trouble with some of its devices and Ice Cream Sandwich, the Droid RAZR MAXX and Droid RAZR in particular, and it’s possible that Motorola had to go back to the drawing board because of those issues.

Hopefully, the company issues some updates soon because for now, Atrix, Atrix 4G and Photon 4G owners are going to have to live in limbo.

Well said. 5 Motorola devices later, I get straight shit on with both the Atrix 4g and the Atrix 2. Windows Phone 8 is calling my name. At least Microsoft has an excuse to suck :) On the upside, switching to the new software the only IS up.

Motorola better get their shit together. I bought my atrix 4g because I had motorola Q. Its called customer satisfaction. People become loyal to a product that treats you right. If no update no more motorola products for me. GIVE US THE UPDATE.

My family buys 3 devices at a time and we really got $hit on. We have Atrix 4g. Had to do a manual reset on 2 of them which left the notifications non functioning. The update was our only hope to getting notifications fixed. I will never buy Motorola trash again….. Over priced over hyped Uber junk……. Samsung here we come!

Motorola needs to offer some type of rebate or something. Android 4 (ICS) came out last October. How can it take a year to update a phone to the version of Android that was available when the Atrix 2 was released? iPhone has gone through to iOS upgrades in the last year. Motorola sucks.

The Bionic still works great but for a phone that only runs single core on Gingerbread and was sold to be Ice Cream Sandwich ready, this is really poor. If the Bionic was just coming out, they would find a way to make it work so the phone can hit the shelves and make money. Sadly, there was no priority for this. I predict mid November for ICS for my bionic. Ouch.

You figure, you buy the flagship phone, shortly thereafter the Razr comes out and the Bionic gets forgotten. If I would have paid $300 for a new phone I would be ticked. I picked mine up when they went to free and my old handset is never going to see ICS so I can be patient. However, I had the same problem with updates on my old Samsung and I decided the Bionic was the way to go as I watched Moto phones get timely updates where my Fascinate was last in line. Now I’m watching Samsung phones get timely updates and Moto is last in line.

It just goes to show you no manufacturer prioritized updates any more than the next one.

In the end, I learned that you have to be happy with the OS that your phone comes with and when you get an update, it’s a bonus but don’t come to expect it you’ll only get disappointed. Bottom line is your phone is bought and paid for and there is no more money for the carrier and manufacturer to make other than the two year contract you signed. At that point, you’ll buy the next phone and the cycle starts all over again.

Final gripe, if you bought the Bionic at full price you spent half of your 2 year contract on an OS that doesn’t take advantage of the hardware. At this point, the time frame will be more than 1/2. That equals clear buyers remorse.

For this reason, I won’t pay full price. I’ll wait for a phone to be out for awhile and buy it at a discount.

My experience with the Bionic is no different than those that bought it right away except they shelled out money for a product that is almost forgotten and for many, a new handset is around the corner.

In the meantime, we’ll continue to watch all the new phones (including low end specs) come out with working ICS and soon JB and continue to chew on our gingerbread crumbs.

My next phone will be a Windows phone. iPhone sucks; and while I really love Android, the fragmentation has gotten out of hand. It’s ridiculous that the Atrix 2 – which was Motorola’s most expensive flagship phone on AT&T at the tiem of release – came out a mere MONTH before ICS was released; and a year later, we STILL can’t get an update. And this is from a company that is now OWNED by the Google!

Hey guys, be on the positive side. Maybe motorola is updating the atrix 2 directly to 4.1 jellybean in the US. I have ics on my atrix 2 now, stock and i am extremely happy with it!

Motorola must be investing in Apple stock. Why else would they ensure the switch to iPhone by disrespecting their Atrix owners.

Motorola’s $100.00 offer is certainly better than nothing. But it means three things:
    1) I must upgrade to another Motorola phone 2) I must wait until my Sprint contract is up and I am eligible for an upgrade and I have to sign another 2 year contract 3) The upgrade phone will certainly not be free! After all how much did I pay for my Photon 4G even after the upgrade discount, not to mention a new case, money which I will never get back, and how much will the new phone cost me despite the rebate??? Since when has a mobile phone become an expensive throw-away after a year or two???

What a damn rip off i bought this phone specifically because Motorola said it would get the update. Now all they offer is $100 rebate on a new phone that will cost about $500 like that’s going to help …Motorola neefs tp replace these phones they said would be updated…i think i smell a lawsuit. Sniff ..sniff
