Motorola Atrix, Electrify and Photon 4G Won’t Get Ice Cream Sandwich

Published

on

Last week, we told you that Motorola’s Ice Cream Sandwich update chart included some grim news for Motorola Atrix, Atrix 2 and Photon 4G owners and while Atrix 2 owners made it out unscathed, Motorola has cancelled Ice Cream Sandwich for the Atrix, Photon 4G and the Motorola Electrify as well.

In a post on Motorola’s forums and as displayed Motorola’s upgrade chart, all three devices will remain on their current version of Android which is Android 2.3 Gingerbread. All three were originally scheduled to be getting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich this year with the Atrix slated for Q3 and the Electrify and Photon 4G scheduled for Q4.

Motorola, last week, slapped a “Further plans coming soon” moniker on all four devices and at that point, their Ice Cream Sandwich updates were up in the air. However, while the Atrix 2 received good news and began receiving its Ice Cream Sandwich roll out last week, the Atrix 4G, Photon 4G and Electrify will be receiving no such news.

The Motorola Photon 4G won’t get ICS.

This is obviously not the outcome that many owners were expecting when the company decided to place the three on the upgrade chart earlier this year but this is the situation that owners are going to have to deal with.

It’s clear that these updates weren’t cooperating in testing and rather than release buggy software, Motorola decided to scrap the updates altogether.

Hopefully, the outcome is different for owners of the Droid Bionic who saw their Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade postponed to the fourth quarter shortly after a Motorola exec promised more transparency when it comes to major Android updates.

Motorola also reiterated this stance in their cancellation of the Atrix, Photon and Electrify ICS updates saying that the company is committed to better communication with its customers in regards to Android software updates, even when it’s news that customers may not want to hear.

Case in point, the ICS updates for the Atrix, Photon 4G and Electrify.

Better to have an update that actually improves the user experience rather than degrade it. All these web sites that claim an update is going to occur on such and such said dates are akin to The National Enquirer and their B.S. stories! When an update comes, enjoy it!
If an update is not compatible with your device, why would you still want it? Instead of trolling these sites for info on updates, maybe people should be getting excited at the possibility of their next upgrade! Besides, a month before you purchase the latest and greatest technology it is already outdated! You’d have to have a heck of alot of money just lying around to keep up with the frenzied pace of technology!!!

Maybe the real problem is with Google and Android. Google doesn’t really care which phones get updated. They only care about how many phones have Android installed on it. At the last Google I/O conference they said 1 million Android devices are activated everyday. Do you think they are all ICS or Jelly(has)been. NO. Probably the majority are 2.3 Gingerbread. The numbers are inflated just to make them look like Android is superior to iOS in popularity. Well fellow Android suckers, Google gives out open source Android to cheap Chinese manufacturers for free and these manufacturers flood the market with crap devices. We are all being brought into the Android whirlpool and where soon all our money and time will get sucked into it. Just stop and consider how risky it is to buy an Android phone with the hope that you will get some kind of update next year. It is just ridiculous, and you think Google really cares whether your phone gets updated? You have to admit Apple makes Google look like a huge stinking dung pile when it comes to updating and support their products. I know it’s painful to swallow, but at least you know that the money you have invested into a new Apple product results in getting a few updates that improve/fix the product. Google is just causing a disposable phone industry to develop and they don’t really care. They are all about the numbers and the money that is flowing out of our accounts into Google’s. I’m beginning to think Google has made me a sucker!!! No more Android for me.

Honestly man, the updates dont come from google. The updates come from for 1. Your cell phone provider. And 2. Your brand of phone, the updates come from motorola, not google. Google gives these brands android software. And its there decision if they send out updates or not. Because google doesn’t control the updates on these phones at all.

that is what happens when you buy a product from a company that tries to buy all the start-ups and companies in the world to dominate the internet. The quality never improves but it deteriorates because it’s impossible to focus on a thousand products.G is about mass acquisition of properties, and folding them down anytime.I am not surprised that Motorola has been screwed. It was just a matter of time.

Figures…moto just wants us to upgrade to a new phone that has ics or jb. I know that my photons life span would of increased by another year or two with the update….dirty marketing always looking at the bottom line.

I love my ATRIX 4G but I’m not going to support a company that does not support its product. Looks like a GS3 or GS4 is in my future.

@Omar…that’s pretty much what they did…instead of releasing the update, they released a new phone I have the electrify. But now there’s an electrify 2 which has….guess what? Ics on it already

    10/20/2012 at 6:23 pm

Eh that’s bullshit. It’s all about money and wanting people to buy the latest shit instead of work to support older phones. I flashed an ICS rom to my photon and it worked FINE so you’re telling me one straight from Android is going to be buggy but one from a single Dev isn’t? Nah. I ain’t buyin it.

Exactly. I haven’t bothered doing that because i am going back to htc. But you hit the nail on the head. Why they cant update the software of the phone as well as udate thto ics?? The new photon q is the same phone with a keyboard and no kickstand but it has ics. Hmmmmm

    10/20/2012 at 6:26 pm

I mean think about it, the latest update that HAS came out for Photon locks the bootloader. So that tells you right there.

Did those of you who are bashing Motorola actually read the article? They are not upgrading certain phones because the ICS sofware doesn’t work. I really like my Photon and I would rather keep it the way it is than to upgrade and have a glitchy phone.

Seriously what they mean to say is Motorola can’t make ICS work. I’m happy with the Photon, so happy in fact that when Sprint offered me an early upgrade I let it pass. I will say that I doubt I’ll be purchasing a Motorola phone in the future, since they simply refuse to support their products. When your buying a device on a two year contract ongoing support is a key consideration in the purchase and Motorola just doesn’t provide that. It’s lucky Google purchased their failing cell phone business, they could never compete with companies like Samsung.

Hi Motorola, plz update the Motorola photon 4g… its got lots of problems…. dont just WALK AWAY on your customers…

Took some time but just won a small claims law suit against Motorola and Sprint for $2,400. If every one did this maybe they’d take some notice and we’d not get screwed by the big guys. Cost me $35. Not a bad ROI.
