Earlier this week, Verizon approved the long awaited Motorola Droid 4 Jelly Bean update for arrival though it remained mum about when the software would roll out. Fortunately, the carrier decided to clear things up, and announced that the Droid 4 Jelly Bean update will be rolling out in phases starting today. This means that the software, which is rolling out Over-the-Air, could be available within the device’s settings.

The Droid 4 Jelly Bean update is rolling out now.

Owners who are interested in the upgrade will want to check in the About section of the settings in order to try and pull the update. For some, it may not be available due to it rolling out in phases. Given the low adoption rate of the Motorola Droid 4 though, we imagine that the software will become available for all soon.

Those that don’t wish to wait for the OTA to arrive have the option of installing the software manually ahead of the OTA’s arrival. Droid 4 owners who aren’t adept at installing Android software manually should wait, however.

The Droid 4 Jelly Bean update brings a ton of new features to owners of the QWERTY enhanced device including Google Now, a new smooth user interface, improved Camera app, better Browser and Calendar from Google, more Face Unlock functionality, and more. All in all, it’s a big upgrade over Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the device’s previous version of Android.

This roll out now means that Verizon has only a few more Android 4.1 Jelly Bean updates to tackle including upgrades for the Droid Bionic and the Motorola Xoom. Both devices are said to be getting Android 4.1 soon but it’s unclear exactly when they might be update. Given their age, it could take awhile.

Ok, shift works if you hold it down while pressing the key you want. But, now i need to figure out how to put my phone to sleep instead of turning off all the time.

I got the update, and it crunched my Facebook contacts. And now Google is demanding full control over one of my email accounts, with the right to FACTORY RESET my device!!!!

got the update this morning… everything works fine, except my caps lock, shift key, and sym key. the funny thing is, they work fine when texting, but not on webpages, such as this one. extremely frustrating. another problem is when typing on webpages, sometimes my cursor jumps around when i delete letters, and i end up deleting things i dont want to. or it wont delete certain words, and instead mashes words up. weird stuff, hope they fix this soon.

What a total mess. Phone has not been right since the update. Keyboard not working properly. Can not group text, which I need the ability. Battery is getting 1/2 the life I had before.

Mine updated yesterday morning. The “sleep” mode option is gone. And my favorite contacts list is corrupted. Before, I had one listing for each contact containing all the phone numbers and email address. Now I have duplicates, each with only one contact detail, such as one containing just the cell phone number, another with just the work number, and yet another with an email address. I don’t know what else is in this “upgrade” yet, but nothing yet has made me feel good about it.

If you ever plan on doing one of these big updates, like GB to ICS, or ICS to JB, you should probably just plan on doing a factory reset. If you don’t you will almost always have some sort of problem. I do one before and after just to be safe and have never had issues with them. I am not saying it is how it should be but it’s just how it is. And it’s a lot easier than getting a whole new phone.

I’m betting none of you did the one thing you’re suppose to do after every OTA update? Did any of you experiencing issues turn the phone off, press and hold both volume keys while pressing power, volume down to HIGHLIGHT recovery, then volume up to ENTER recovery, then press both volume keys when you see Android, then wipe cache and then factory data reset your phone? I know, you loose all your contacts and all your apps, but the fact is if you back up your phone with the “Google” services like they suggest, all your apps automatically reinstall themselves, well at least 85% will. I follow those steps after every upgrade they send to my phone. And for those of you who “root” your phone, how hard is it to plug it into your computer and click the one “root” button? I’ve seen the videos, not that hard. Plus you have to connect it to your PC anyways to get the new JB drivers for your PC. Everything works very well on my Droid 4 with JB as you can see.

Like an idiot I allowed my Droid4 to update and now it is mostly useless. At first, battery life was measured in minutes (back of phone got hot), shift keys screwed up, odd noises on calls, dropped calls, data and bluetooth intermittently turned themselves off, slow 4g, slow 3g, etc. As recommended by Verizon and Motorola, I did the recovery process and now the battery life is better (but not as good as it was), shift keys work but you have to hold it down, and now a new twist, range is next to nothing. I can see our local tower and can’t make calls. If they don’t get it sorted out this afternoon, I will be warrantying it today.

I hate the jelly bean “down”grade to my Motorola Droid phone. It is harder to “swipe” instead of typing. Some sites are impossible to reply to because of the keyboard. But the main problem is that I can no longer send group emails. Why have a “group” option in “contacts” if you can’t send group emails? My contract with Verizon will run out soon and I’m planning to switch to an iphone if this problem is not solved. As far as I’m concerned this is going backwards.

I accidentally hit the upgrade button today. :( I knew what would happen. It happened with my droid 3. Everything went to hell. As many have mentioned, the shift no longer works as it did, while overall it seemed to forget I use the pop out keyboard, its featured markedly diminished. They upgraded my alarm clock with timer right off the world, along with my weather widget that worked great, I used it often. The camera changed and even the standard smilies in texts would now be the stupid android face, I could go on and on. I understand it’s branding and marketing, and sell to us up (and to as many places as possible) and ultimate it’s just a damn phone. It’s just so disappointing every damn time.
