The Motorola X Phone, which has been rumored as device later this year, might actually be more than just that as new rumors suggest that the X Phone is not just one phone, but a brand of phones and will be possibly be coming with an assortment of intriguing features including a way to customize hardware, a heavily subsidized price and a release date in June.

Rumors have been swirling about the X Phone, a device that is said to be Motorola’s next smartphone and one that may have Google’s fingerprints on it. Previously, we had heard some pretty amazing things about the device but expectations were tempered after Google said that it was still working through Motorola’s pipeline of devices and that there isn’t really anything that is ‘wow’, at least to Google standards.

The Motorola X Phone is again rumored to be a superphone, and one that could compete with the Galaxy S4.

The Motorola X Phone is again rumored to be a superphone, and one that could compete with the Galaxy S4.

The latest rumors have also pointed to the X Phone being a more realistic device than the superphone that we heard about previously with whispers suggesting a 5-inch or 4.7-inch 1080p display, a 10MP camera in the rear and possibly a 5MP camera in the front, and a dual-core processor from Qualcomm.

However, a new report has breathed new life into those superphone rumors as Android and Me is suggesting that the X Phone isn’t simply one phone. Instead, it’s going to be a brand of phones that will be aimed at phones like the Samsung Galaxy S4 and brands like the Galaxy series.

The X Phone has been rumored for a debut at Google I/O in May. It appears, according to this rumor, that that may turn out to be true as the X Phone released date has been pegged for June. That certainly lines up with an announcement at Google I/O and the timing that Google has used for announcement to release in the past.

That’s not all though. Besides being a brand, with the first X Phone coming in June, it’s claimed that Motorola will guarantee one big Android software upgrade and that Motorola will be updating the phones itself. Carriers will apparently be out of the picture.

The X Phone lineup of devices including this first one, will evidently be sold through an online store, possibly the Google Play Store, and they evidently will be sold through carrier retail stores as well.

As the report points out, carriers will likely need some kind of incentive to acquiesce Motorola’s plan to roll out software updates itself, rather than letting the carrier be in charge. What that might be is not yet known.

The processor is said to be faster than the dual-core processor that we heard rumored before, and users are said to be able to unlock the bootloader and SIM lock to use it on any carrier. The device is also said to be subsidized heavily by Motorola and Google which could mean a cheap price tag like the Nexus 4.

Lastly, the device is said to be coming with custom hardware. This means that customers may be able to choose their color, and configure specs like RAM and storage capacity. A custom device will be delivered in one week from Motorola, according to the rumor. In a nutshell, it would let consumers build their own phone.

If this is true, the X Phone series could be a huge splash for Google and Motorola. However, given recent rumors and Google’s comments, it’s best to take this all with a grain of salt, especially since the news came on the day of the Galaxy S4 announcement, a device that would be a competitor to the X Phone.

I like Motorola but dual- core is more than 2 years old. We need nvidia tegra 4i quad-core and 2gs of ram, full HD, 13 megapixel and gorilla glass 3.

I only buy from Motorola. They have the pullout keyboards. I’m 32 & have big hands. I CAN NOT under ANY circumstances use those stupid malfunctioning touchy keypads & I’m not talking into the phone so everyone can hear my convo + it gets it wrong every time & I have no accent. Just like phones got smaller & smaller until people realized how dumb that was – I also have no need for a TV against my face giving me cancer. Just make a nice normal sized phone with a keyboard that’s fast & leave me be. Stop trying to copy everything & be “trendy.” Keep the keyboards or I will leave your brand. The Moto Droid 4 is the best phone on the market today. It just needed 2 GB of ram. They should allow us to add to the phones hardware like PC’s do. It’s a piece of cake.

The iphone 5 is dual core, the Droid Razr HD/HD Maxx are dual core, the ipad mini is dual core, the Galaxy S3 is dual core…. so in reality it isn’t even year old. Your needs seem excessive, costly, and not important to the operation of the product.

How about a 9000mAh battery for that power sucking quad core that no one really NEEDS? Better grab an external battery pack, maybe one of those solar powered phone cases too. Hey! Maybe they make a tiny windmill generator so you can blow into it to charge all of that equipment or a hand crank generator from one of those emergency flashlights! XD

That’s another thing, need. Its irritating enough to see people comment on these random sites with ridiculous or unnecessary hardware specifications, but to say you NEED that? Really? For what? Angry Birds and Facebook? What app on a mobile device would POSSIBLY utilize a quad core processor AND 2 GB of RAM?? If ANYONE thinks they need that much computing power on their MOBILE PHONE, its time to take app inventory. You want serious computing power? Buy a laptop. You want your phone to last more than 4 hours on a full charge? Stop with the excessive unnecessary hardware. My Razr Maxx has a dual core processor and the thing STILL only lasts one whole day! If anything, my “need” would be some technological breakthrough in battery life, because all of this state-of-the-art mobile hardware means SH*T if the thing won’t last a day of moderate use.

      Well said. Couldn’t agree more!

Except that quad core processors use less power, because they don’t have to work as hard when doing simple tasks. I have a Razr HD and it makes it through a day easily (40% left) while running bluetooth audio for 8.5 hrs and heavy use for 1 hr. And that’s with a faster processor than your Razr Maxx. What do you think will happen with the Octa-core GS4? I bet it gets WAY better battery life.

What you really want is a display that uses less power, because that’s the real battery hog. It’s not so much the processor (aside from when gaming), but the dynamic video/animations that use the most battery.

User customizable hardware is like communism. Sounds great in theory. How many people do you know would have a clue about what hardware they need on their phones? And how many people do you think would shop online to order a smartphone like ordering a PC from Dell?

Smartphones sales require service. People shop for them at stores. Their carrier stores or the Apple store for iPhones. Sure, it’s a geeks dream to order a phone online and customize it to your needs and wants. I won’t lie. I am excited about this. But I have my doubts about this helping Motorola sell phones to the average smartphone buyer. That’s a recipe for market failure.

“The X Phone lineup of devices including this first one, will evidently be sold through an online store, possibly the Google Play Store, and they evidently will be sold through carrier retail stores as well.” You will be able to go into the stores too, but I agree with everything else.

Honestly this would be relevant if the technicians in the store had any idea what they are talking about, but with rare exception, i walk into the store more informed about their products than the sales staff. Its frustrating how often I have walked into a store and asked a question i know the answer too just to test, and i am blatantly lied to or the sales tech really just doesn’t know the answer. The kind of person that would customize their phone is more likely to be better informed than an in store sales staff anyway so its perfect for them, and they can still provide common configuration in the store. Overall it would be a big win for everybody and would hopefully usher in an era like desktop and laptop computers have enjoyed for years.
