My iPad 2 Is Still Vacationing on Lantau Island HK

Published

on

Apple and I have been playing all kind of cat and mouse games with shipping over the last week. Not only am I still waiting to see my iPad 2 make it somewhere close to the shores of the US, but I had to return my MacBook Pro 13, or rather swap it out for a new machine. (More on that later.)

I’m writing this not so much to complain but so that others who might be in a similar boat might get some information. From what I’m reading Apple sort of reneged on its Free, Fast Shipping for the iPad 2. According to various posts I’m seeing, Fedex is telling users that Apple chose International Economy Shipping for the iPad 2. That means as far as Fedex is concerned those shipments go on a space available basis. And given the tumult in that region caused by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, quite a bit of traffic is getting rerouted through Lantau Island in Hong Kong.

Like I said, not much to complain about given the circumstances, beyond Apple not living up to its initial promise of Free, Fast Shipping. Again, that also depends on if the reports are true from Fedex, or that’s just a company line. We all know that game.

Regardless, my iPad 2 has been vacationing on Lantau Island, HK since last Thursday, which was the last day of the 3 to 5 days shipping I was given when I ordered. Ah, well.

As to the MacBook Pro 13. These laptops rock and roll when it comes to speed and performance, but I’m now about to send my second one back. After a couple of days I noticed a lag when it came to using the built in trackpad. I’d touch it but the cursor wouldn’t move for a second or two. That delay kept getting worse. I took it to the Genius Bar, they recommended reinstalling from scratch. I did. The problem seemed to go away. But a couple of days later it came back. So, I sent back the purchase and Apple shipped me a new one. Intriguingly that all took place after the iPad 2 order and the return and shipping of the new machine happened while the iPad 2 is taking its respite on Lantau Island.

And it looks like this MacBook Pro is going back as well. It didn’t take a couple of days for the same trackpad drag issue to manifest itself. It only took a couple of hours. I’m guessing there is a hardware software conflict somewhere, so I’m monitoring the issue as a slowly install my Apps on the machine after yet another wipe and clean install. This doesn’t seem to be a widespread issue, so I’m guessing it has something to do with some combination of Apps that I use. Regardless it is frustrating to me and to the Apple techs.

It will be interesting to see if this exchange happens before the iPad 2 actually leaves Lantau Island, HK.

The latest update fixed an ongoing issue for my MBP, almost a year before they got around to fixing the lag and stutter issue experienced by so many. I wonder if I can continue to justify the price, when in the end the hardware continues to fail.

One clarification, “FedEx International Economy Shipping” is the name that FedEx uses for their “within 5 business days” international service, which they elaborate on as typically 3 ~ 4 days for “key Asian” markets.

    https://fedex.com/us/services/intl/

No doubt things have slowed down due to the tragedy in Japan, however I believe apple has always used this same tier of service for their “free, fast shipping”

FedEx also offer the more expensive services of “FedEx International Next Flight”, “FedEx International First” and “FedEx international priority”, however I don’t believe apple has ever used these services.

The 3 ~ 5 day service from Asia is the “International Economy Shipping”.

Unless Fed Ex plans to put my iPad on a SR-71 and air drop it over my home in Orlando, I’m not sure how else it will make it to my front door by tomorrow afternoon from Hong Kong as Fed Ex’s website currently states.

This iPad launch has been a complete boondoggle.

Same issue. Unfortunately mine better get here soon otherwise I will lose several hundred dollars of trade in value. My contract to sell my current Ipad expires with Gazelle April 4th. FYI, I ordered my IPAD 2 the first day at 6:30 AM Eastern. I guess I should have waited in line.

My company is getting a lot of things late due to Japan’s issues and inspections. This is causing pile ups at airport sorting locations, especially for hot items like iPad 2. My iPad 2 is still stuck there as well. Ur not alone, it will come.

I came across this blog when I was searching for info about my own iPad’s semi-permanent residence in HK. I was wondering if FedEx is having bigger problems because a shipment from another company took much longer than FedEx promised a couple of weeks ago, and Japan can’t be blamed. The package originated in Salt Lake City, UT, and I live about half an hour outside of Dallas, TX. Both are major cities, but the package (ground shipment) took almost two weeks to arrive here. It sat for 3 days in Dallas (after several days in Denver). I could have *walked* to the Dallas warehouse and picked it up faster than their delivery service. This leads me to wonder if FedEx is just spinning on the Apple shipments. They sure do seem to be slower than usual these days.

April 6 and my Ipad 2 has been sitting there since 4/3… and it is to be delivered 4/7/ ha! not likely. Why doesn’t Apple fess up and be transparent with its customers. Its shipping stinks…..

Unfortunately, I’m right there with everyone else. Ordered mine March 15, had an original ship date of April 15th but tracking says it shipped from HK to Landau Island and yep……there it sits. It’s hard to be patient when I also went out and bought all of my accessories and made my own killer leather case for it. ARGH!!!! I love Apple but I hate their shipping. ‘nough said.

Yikes-I also came across this blog while anxiously awaiting an update on my iPad2 that I ordered 6 weeks ago. The order just keeps saying it is “prepared for shipment”-for the past few weeks. Three weeks ago I called Apple to complain and they said there were some “issues” and to assuage me- threw in the leather cover. Can’t wait for that either! Of course, it too is in “limbo”.

Hi-This has been an incrediably frustrating process. Evidently, customers orders are not being sent out as per their “place in the que” -as Apple has been saying. Instead, they are shipping them out as to when the due date was posted. Which means, Apple gave me a shipping date of 4/28, b/c when I ordered on 3/25 thye were shipping 3-4 weeks. TWO days later though, the shipping dates were 2-3 weeks-many of those people already have received their ipads. Mine is still hanging in CHINA-for over 30 hours now. It is also irritating when it is shipped over the weekend-1-3 days “express” it ain’t.
So word to the wise-if the shipping dates change to a better length of time-order another, you can then cancel the laggard.

    You poor babies!

You are so entitled and so deserving of getting iPads in your house.  It is so essential.  And I’m sure getting it will make you feel better about the 99% of the people in Syria who don’t have one and the folks on the south side of Chicago who some day might be allowed in the local publicly-funded library to look at their first computer.

Do you think your fries will be warm enough tonight to go with that hamburger that you take for granted?  Do all your friends drive a car?  Sure.  Everyone does. It’s part of your circumscribed world.

Whatever you do, don’t be aware of others in this world.  What’s most important is the fast delivery of your iPad.  Cry.  Criticize.  Complain about high gas prices, because you’re entitled a fillip for $30 or less while you take advantage of your unlimited minutes on your expensive wireless plan  That’s a God-given right.  Why doesn’t God give cars to most people in Sao Paulo.  Who cares.  By the way, wtf is a “Sao Paolo”…

Wow you are an idiot….I certainly hope you were writing this from a free computer in your local public library, and that you don’t own a single gadget or a car cause that is the only circumstance under which it can even be remotely ok. But guess what, when you buy a product from a company that makes certain guarantees when they know full well that they can’t fulfill them you have the right to be pissed, anxious, and to hold them responsible. Especially if you paid a hard earned 700 bucks for it. By your stupid logic a company can screw you overin any which way it wants to and you are supposed to he quiet because there are starving children in Africa. Tell you what, next time your car is wrecked or better yet if the roof of your home caves in, dont get it fixed and live in a tent on your front yard…you know…in solidarity with every American that has lost his home to foreclosure. Peace.

Warner:  I feel a “lag time” on your mouse pad is a small thing to complain about.  Certainly a minute issue to write a blog about.  Your delivery times were delayed because of a tsunami.  Apple and FedEx are to blame for this?  Hmmmm…Sounds like someone is complaining needlessly.

To everyone else:  The shipping times nowadays are incredible.  If you are not pleased with ordering a configured computer and receiving it in two weeks, you are ridiculous.  Yes, you receive an “estimated” shipping date when you purchase.  Go to dictionary.com and look up the definition of “estimated”.  Then, stop your complaining.

By the way:  Biff!!  GREAT post!  STANDING APPLAUSE!!!!  YOU ROCK!!

      01/14/2012 at 9:56 am

Scott your response is ignorant.  If I spend money on a product it should respond the way it is designed and sold to respond.  If it doesn’t the problem should be fixed at no charge and should be done in a timely manner.  As for the shipping…when I ordered my Ipad the website offers 1-3 day free shipping or in store pick up.  I just recieved confirmation that my purchase is also in Lantau Island and wont be here for another week.  Had I hknown it would take that long I would of chosen in store pick up and would have it in 1-3 days.  Sounds like you are a little defensive about Apple and don’t want to hear anything negative.

Guys…Last week was a Chinese national holiday. When it ended, Chinese customs revamped their inspections of high electronics. This is sort of a new crackdown so there are massive delays on electronics for people that ordered around the end of September.
