New Apple TV Will Let You Sign Up For Netflix And Pay With iTunes Account

Apple finally announced its new Apple TV today at an event in San Francisco. The new Apple TV has the same basic features as the old model, but with a new user interface and 1080p resolution. It also adds an easier way to sign up for Netflix.

Previously you’d have to sign up for Netflix on a Mac or PC before logging into the Apple TV. Now with the new Apple TV you’ll be able to sign up right from your TV. With the new Apple TV you can sign up for Netflix using your iTunes account. The payment will go through your iTunes account just like a magazine subscription.

After you set up your Netflix account you’ll be able to view 1080p streaming video on your Apple TV with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. Of course this doesn’t apply to all Netflix videos, but most newer selections films should.Netflix

This is the first time Apple has done anything quite like this on the Apple TV. Presumably, Apple will be taking a cut of the Netflix subscription fees. Apple typically takes 30 percent of all payments through the App Store and iBookstore. It would make sense that Apple would take the same cut here.

The move could also mean that Netflix will be able to do a similar deal with the iOS apps as well. That would make using the service much easier for new subscribers to sign up. It would also make it a bit easier to keep track of monthly bills if it’s just added to your iTunes account.

The new plans probably still only work with streaming, though. It’s doubtful that you could pay for Netflix DVDs or Blu-rays through iTunes.
