New iMovie App Isn’t Officially Supported on the Original iPad, but Can Work Sans Jailbreak

Apple is limiting the iMovie video editing app, now a Universal App, to just the new iPad 2 on tablets, meaning that original iPad 1 owners are out of luck. However, that may not be the case after all as some enterprising developers have been able to get iMovie to install on their first-generation Apple tablet without even having to resort to jailbreaking!

The process is a bit more complicated than synchronizing your tablet to iTunes to get the app installed, but isn’t as scary as having to jailbreak or run lines of code to get the app to install properly. According to 9to5 Mac, all one needs to do is to install the iPhone Configuration Utility, which supports both Mac and Windows users and is now at version 3.3.

Once the utility is downloaded, open it and click “Applications” in the left panel, and select the iMovie app to install. Connect your iPad 1 and hit install, and you should be good to go.

Reasons for ‘officially’ limiting iMovie to the second-generation tablet is because Apple may feel that the limited RAM, lack of cameras, and single-core processor on the original tablet may hinder the complete iMovie experience.

I tried it on Windows 7 without sucess. The success stories I have seen all seem to be Mac users.
