A mysterious Samsung Galaxy Note 4 feature could save your life. A small sensor in the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will measure UV radiation as part of Samsung’s continued push to a full body health and fitness solution. This Galaxy Note 4 feature will alert users to unsafe UV Radiation levels to help protect the owner’s skin from damage.

S Health is a major part of the Samsung Galaxy S5, with stress level measuring, heart rate sensor built-in to the device and other areas of measurement, but a UV sensor would be an exclusive Galaxy Note 4 feature.

At first glance this sounds like a Galaxy Note 4 feature that could contribute to the feature bloat of the Galaxy S4, but with new details this could be a very useful tool. With a UV sensor the Galaxy Note 4 can alert owners when UV exposure is too high, so that they can wear the right clothing, sunglasses and sunscreen — and when needed get out of the sun.

SamMobile discovered this unique Galaxy Note 4 feature back in June, but a new report now outlines how Samsung will implement this Galaxy Note 4 feature into S Health, where it could save your life. According to SamMobile the Galaxy Note 4 will be the first smartphone to incorporate a UV sensor.

Pitching a new Galaxy Note 4 feature as life-saving sounds like an exaggeration, but if Samsung is able to use this as the report indicates it will do everything from help you avoid a sunburn, premature skin aging and with action it could help reduce your risk of skin cancer.

The sensor will be part of S Health and the user will need to keep a 60 degree angle of elevation to the sun with the sensor that may be on the back of the device to actually measure radiation. With this in mind, it’s not clear if the Galaxy Note 4 feature will push a warning to users, or if they will need to manually check UV radiation levels with the Galaxy Note 4.

Simply knowing the UV Index level is not enough to make the right choices and avoid a sunburn and exposure that can increase the risk of cancer or premature skin aging. In addition to telling users what the level is, the S Health app will also offer three to four tips on what to do to stay safe. A sample of the warnings and suggestions that we may see in the Galaxy Note 4 S Health app are below,

UV Index 3-5 (Moderate): A UV Index reading of 3 to 5 means moderate risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure.
• Stay in shade near midday when the sun is strongest.
• If outdoors, wear protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses.
• Generously apply broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen every 2 hours, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating.
• Watch out for bright surfaces, like sand, water and snow, which reflect UV and increase exposure

UV Index 11+ (Extreme): A UV Index reading of 11 or more means extreme risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure. Take all precautions because unprotected skin and eyes can burn in minutes.
• Try to avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
• If outdoors, seek shade and wear protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses.
• Generously apply broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen every 2 hours, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating.
• Watch out for bright surfaces, like sand, water and snow, which reflect UV and increase exposure.

Samsung will also include a series of True and False statements about UV exposure as part of the app to help users understand that a tan does not protect your from UV radiation and that exposure still happens even on cloudy days.

The Note 4 display will likely arrive with a 5.7-inch size, like the Galaxy Note 3, but with a higher QHD resolution similar to the LG G3. The Galaxy Note 4 camera will offer between 12-20MP, and inside expect a 64-bit processor, 32GB of storage and new Android software, based on all the latest leaks.
