Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat Update Release Coming Soon

Published

on

Tonight, Google announced that it would start rolling out the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 Android 4.4 KitKat updates to select users starting tonight. The company also offer some vague details on the Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat update saying that it expects to roll out the update at some point in the near future along with an update to the cellular version of the Nexus 7.

In a bit of a surprise announcement, Google today announced new Android 4.4 KitKat update release details saying that it will start rolling out the Nexus 7 Android 4.4 KitKat update and Nexus 10 Android 4.4 KitKat update starting tonight. The roll out will encompass the Wi-Fi only versions of the Nexus 7, at least for now, as the company says that the update will arrive for the cellular models in the near future.

Google also revealed that the Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat update won’t be rolling out tonight either though it also promised to roll it out soon. The company did not offer any specific details about the upgrade only saying that the software would touch down for its former flagship in the near future. This means that Nexus 4 owners are going to have to wait a little longer for the software to arrive though we imagine that it won’t take too long for Google to deploy the upgrade.

Once the software does arrive for the Nexus 4, it will replace the device’s Android 4.3 Jelly Bean software with a number of new features including a new immersion mode, improved multitasking, and a smart dialer application. It won’t, however, bring the launcher that arrived with the Nexus 5, something that is likely going to be a disappointment for Nexus 4 users. That feature, at least for now, will remain an exclusive on the Nexus 5, Google’s current Nexus smartphone.

When the Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat update does roll out, it will likely be accompanied by a similar announcement. Google typically doesn’t offer any warning to its users so we should see it roll out on a random date.

I can not pretend I am not disappointed. Having left apple’s wonderland with the promise of updates, the fact that I am still waiting for it, and that we wont be getting the N5 launcher is frustrating to say the least.

Google will probably port the launcher in the future. They first want to see how people react to it right now on the nexus 5, and will then decide to port it. You can install the launcher manually from XDA for the same experience.
