Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat Update Release Frustrates Users

Published

on

If the Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat update has started to roll out Over-the-Air (OTA), it’s rolling out extremely slowly because there are only a few Nexus 4 users reporting the OTA update. In fact, a majority of Nexus 4 owners we’ve talked to claim that they are still waiting for the Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat update to roll out.

Last week, Google announced that it would be rolling out the Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat update in the near future though it didn’t say exactly when. A few days later, the company introduced Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat update factory images and binaries, something that hinted at the arrival of an Over-the-Air update for users. That OTA update never arrived and Nexus 4 owners were left in the dark.

Earlier today, we told you that the Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat update OTA was closer than ever and it appears that that assessment was dead on as the Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat update appears to be rolling out to owners right now, only a few hours after new factory images and binaries hit Google’s developer site.

From the looks of things, the roll out is starting off slow. We’ve only seen a few people claim to have the update which means that this update is likely going to be pushing out for a couple of days, at least. Typically, Google’s Android updates can last up to a week or more as the company works to get thousands of users updated at the same time. Google may be rolling it out slowly to ensure that whatever it caught in the previous build isn’t on board the new software.

Those who wish to skip the OTA can update the device by sideloading the update with the files on Google’s site or users can simply wait for the OTA file to be found, something that should happen in the not-so-distant future as the Nexus 4 roll out picks up speed.

While the release of new factory images and the presumed release of the OTA update is fantastic news, there are many Nexus 4 owners who have been extremely frustrated by Google’s handling of the Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat update roll out.

We initially saw frustration emerge when the Nexus 4 wasn’t included amongst the initial Android 4.4 KitKat updates. Then, over the weekend, Nexus 4 owners were peeved when Google released factory images for the Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat update but didn’t unleash the OTA, something that pushed many to sideload the software.

Earlier this week, we saw some Nexus 4 owners lash out because the Verizon Moto X Android 4.4 KitKat update rolled out ahead of the Nexus 4’s update. Yesterday, we again saw Nexus 4 owners start voicing frustration on social media because of the new Android 4.4 KitKat build. And now, Nexus 4 owners are complaining about the speed at which the Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat update is rolling out, with some questioning whether it’s even rolling out at all.

Indeed, this Android 4.4 KitKat roll out has been far different than other Android roll outs for Nexus devices. Typically, we see a very orderly roll out, across devices. This roll out has been much more fragmented, something that has been compounded by the silence from Google.

That said, Nexus 4 users who don’t want to sideload and are still waiting for the Android 4.4 KitKat OTA to arrive should remain patient as the software should be arriving soon. Keep in mind, even though the Nexus 4 Android 4.4 update is slow to start, it will still arrive months before the anticipated Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 update.

Manually checked for updates and nothing on my Nexus 4 yet. It’s odd for Google to do this. Mistakes happen but I hope the folks at Google don’t let this happen time and time again… I’ll be waiting for that update!

I hate it when Google promises that Nexus 4 will get first update and everyone in world gets up date and I don’t even in US. I think google has lied and betrayed i will have to think next time before i nexus. I would switch back to apple if this is google’s policy in future……..

iOS 7 is up to what? 7.0.4? With 7.1 already in beta? In the space of one month?

I wouldn’t exactly call it smooth, unless you are referring to the new UI which looks like they smoothed it down with a belt sander.

Yeah Like iOS 7,didnt cause severe proems on many phones. You don’t even own a Nexus 4 – you are just trolling. And for the rest of you – its only been available since Nov 4 – you really can’t wait 3 weeks?

They like to fix the bugs before unleashing it on the masses, not cripple people’s phones.

I agree with those who complain about slow roll out.
I bought a Nexus phone to get the latest Android version at the very earliest of the release.
The Nexus phone it self is just a mediocre phone, looking at the hardware, so latest Android version is the selling point.
    So, what is happening?

The Nexus 5 isn’t all that dramatically special software wise. Could hardly tell the difference. Yeah you don’t have tonswipe up before you use “go Google” big whoop. Kept the 4 gave the 5 to the wife.

No you didn’t. If you wanted it at the earliest you’d sideload like many others do. They stage rollouts to minimize the effect of bugs on people.

Nexus updates are pushed to 1% of users as a soak test. Then if things go fine, 25, 50, 75 until 100% of users have the update.

Not sure what people’s problem is…maybe hacky news sites making a big deal of nothing?

Relax people. It will be along soon enough. Read reports of it being a bit buggy so perhaps the slow rollout is a plus. Not planning on performing the OTA until I’m sure it will work and the WugFresh software will reestablish ROOT….
