Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 Android 4.4.2 KitKat Updates Rolling Out
The Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and Nexus 4 are currently in the process of receiving Android 4.4.2 KitKat, just a few hours after the update was rumored for the HTC One Google Play Edition and HTC One, and just a few days after Google rolled out an Android 4.4.1 KitKat update to the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 5 and to the company’s Nexus 10.
Earlier today, we reported on a rumor that claimed that Android 4.4.2 KitKat would be rolling out to the HTC One Google Play Edition and the HTC One with Sense at some point. The rumor suggested that it would arrive in the place of Android 4.4.1 KitKat, an update that just started rolling out last week to Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 5 and Nexus 10 users.
We pointed out that we had seen Android 4.4.2 KitKat activity increase on our servers over the past few days and that the Nexus 4, Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 were allegedly running the software. This led us to believe that something could be close but we couldn’t say for sure given that these types of listings can be spoofed. Today, those suspicions proved to be dead on as the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 5, and likely the Nexus 10, are all receiving upgrades to Android 4.4.2 KitKat.
We still aren’t entirely sure what the differences between the two updates is though a quick search across carrier support pages reveals a small change log courtesy of Sprint. The change log is for Sprint Nexus 5 owners but it could apply for other devices as well:
- Fix for clearing the VM Indicator
- Fix for delivery of the VM Indicator
- Various additional software fixes
- Security enhancements
The update is definitely rolling out for the Nexus 5, and users have sent in confirmation that the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 7 are now receiving the update as well. The Nexus 4’s prompt doesn’t reveal anything, something that is confirmed by the screenshot below.
Google’s Nexus software updates tend to take a week or more to roll out completely so it could be a few days or more before Nexus owners receive the upgrade to Android 4.4.2 Jelly Bean and all it has to offer.
Those who don’t wish to wait for the OTA to arrive will be able to download and install the update manually though we have only discovered the Nexus 5 Android 4.4.2 KitKat update on Google’s servers. The others should be making their way to the surface in the near future. Only users who know how to use the Android SDK and adb sideload method should use the above file.

Same with me as well. I still have the 4.4 Android version that came with the phone. Where as my friend who got his phone almost a month after me received bot 4.4.1 and 4.4.2 both. Has anything to do with the carrier you use for the device? I am using ATT where as my friend uses Lyca.

Maybe they are rolling out slowly. Mine was the handset from very 1st batch which Google shipped.

6th paragraph should read 4.4.2 Kitkat, not 4.4.2 Jelly Bean.

If only 4.4.2 fixed issues with email sync. Some people are reporting that the exchange issues have been fixed, but other people are still having issues with other protocols. For me a POP3 account that I have gets stuck in a sync loop and kills the battery in a matter of hours. If you have been having similar issues post in this google support thread: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/nexus/contacts-and-sync/nexus-5/8FGjFTNkcPU , I created it myself to bring attention to the fact that the email sync issue is not exclusive to exchange accounts.

My Nexus 5 never did get the 4.4.1 update but 4.4.2 came in this evening (12/9/2013). One other change I noticed is to the Power Control widget. Location is now a three way toggle – off, battery saving, and GPS.

The 3 way location setting on the widget is already present in 4.4.1,
