Nexus 5 Release Date Rumor Needs to Die

Published

on

While the Nexus 5 release date is rumored for late October, reports suggesting an October 31st release date are off base and misleading as the source of those rumors confirmed to Gotta Be Mobile that the date is merely a placeholder and is based on rumors rather than fact.

Several weeks ago, reports about a possible Nexus 5 release date surfaced thanks to Amazon listings showcasing Spigen Nexus 5 cases and Spigen Nexus 5 screen protectors. Curiously, the listings showed estimated shipping dates of October 30th and October 31st, leading many to believe that Spigen might be working with some inside information and that either October 30th and October 31st might be the Nexus 5 release date.

Those rumors were squashed by Gotta Be Mobile and by a handful of other sites that dug a little further than an accessory listing on Amazon. Spigen confirmed that these dates were approximations based on the Nexus 5 rumor mill. Nexus 5 rumors for weeks have suggested a launch in October, possibly October 14th.

Despite the comments from the company responsible for putting the listing up on Amazon, sites continue to report on the Spigen cases and their release dates that remain unchanged from a few weeks ago, speculating that they may be based on inside information and that October 31st may actually be the Nexus 5 release date. That’s not the case.

Because this rumor needs to die, here is the full statement that Spigen provided to Gotta Be Mobile back on September 24th:

In regards to the Amazon listing, it is simply an estimated placeholder date that we decided upon due to rumors that are circulating. When uploading products to Amazon an in-stock date is necessary for the listing to go up. We will be coming out with a full product line-up for the Nexus 5 but there is no concrete ETA for those products yet.

In other words, the dates listed on Amazon are based on speculation, not fact, or insider information. It’s simply the case of a case maker trying to get a little bit of attention ahead of a massive product launch, nothing more.

There are rumors, credible rumors, that suggest that the Nexus 5 might launch and get released in late October but those rumors do not mention October 30th or October 31st. Not surprising given that they are two completely made up dates.

Google’s Nexus 5 is a very real device and it will be heading to shelves sometime in the feature. And when it does, it will likely have a ton of accessories backing it.

This is likely LG's version of the Nexus 5.

This is likely LG’s version of the Nexus 5.

The device is also expected to feature a large 5-inch 1080p display, Snapdragon 800 processor, 8MP camera, Android 4.4 KitKat, and a price tag that is said to be far cheaper than the iPhone 5s’ $650 unlocked price.

The company’s new Nexus smartphone is rumored to be launching alongside the Android 4.4 KitKat update and a new Nexus 10 tablet that is rumored to be coming from Asus, the maker of the Nexus 7, and not Samsung.

Release dates just let the public know that a product is out and ready for the media debut. Everyone can then say…ooooh and ahhhh and take out their cameras and start shooting videos. Now the availability date is another story!!! Once a product is available then its ready to be snatched up with credit cards, debit cards and checks.

And, interestingly, this other Nexus 5 case is listed on Amazon as “in stock”:

You have the wrong viewpoint. The Nexus smartphone line makes Google no profit and is for prestige and to influence design. It’s a annual developer showcase phone for Android. Google doesn’t care how many or few they sell, thus they don’t bow to public pressure to put stuff like SD cards.

Due to the top tier specs (Snapdragon 800, 5″ 1080p screen) for LESS than $400, demand will be extraordinary. People will snap it up, no matter when they release it.

Google has made up their mind. They will release it when they want to — probably in November like the last two Nexus phones. Announced in October, released in November — as in 2011 and 2012.

If they are not careful the secrecy will push many people to go out and purchase a competitors phone. Everybody has an idea of what it will be able to do but it is sketchy on what it will look like. If it has the same glass body design as the Nexus 4 I will go with something else.If they want to out do Apple then they need to do what Apple promised and never delivered. Make the base level phone 32Gb of memory and release a 64 Gb as well as a 128Gb model. They would have the only phone with 128Gb.

We KNOW what it will look like. Enough pictures and even videos, some from the FCC itself have been posted on the internet. Google LG-D820. No glass back.

They should atleast inform public about the actual date of release of the phone Nexus5. Rumors should be stopped spreading.

The body design that has been leaked is obviously prototypes so it means nothing. For all we know they could use the style of the one in the KitKat announcement video but make it with a brushed aluminum body which would take a huge dump on the iPhone and the HTC One.

The Galaxy Nexus was released in November but the announcement was in October.
