Nexus 6 Android 5.1 Lollipop Update Arrives

Published

After a few weeks of waiting, earlier this week Google finally announced Android 5.1 Lollipop, and confirmed it’s now rolling out to Nexus devices. The Android 5.1 update comes just a few months after Google’s initial Lollipop release, aimed at fixing a few small problems that have been floating around. And now today we’ve received word the Nexus 6 update should start arriving today.

Back in June Google debuted Android L, which is now known as Android 5.0 Lollipop that the company fully revealed in October and launched in November on the new Nexus 9, Nexus 6, and Nexus Player. Over the past few weeks it’s arrived for many additional smartphones and tablets. It was followed by Android 5.0.1 and Android 5.0.2, and now a full maintenance update to Android 5.1 should be hitting all users soon.

While Google confirmed Android 5.1 earlier this week, they didn’t state which devices would get it right away. However, they’ve already released the factory system images for the Nexus 5, original Nexus 7 as well as the Nexus 10. So far there’s no image for the Nexus 6, and we’ve yet to hear the Nexus 6 Android 5.1 update is rolling out. Today though, Sprint confirmed it will kick off today.

The Android 5.0 Lollipop update delivered a number of new features detailed below, as well as tweaks and enhancements to the overall look and feel. Along with tons of animations and neat visual effects for Nexus and Android users. Shortly after the release problems started to emerge for many Nexus phone and tablet owners, and now Android 5.1 is rolling out to curb most of them.

As expected, Google made the announcement regarding Android 5.1 Lollipop but has yet to reveal any further details regarding which devices will get it, and when. That said, we can expect all new Nexus devices to see the update, and eventually even the Nexus 4 should see Android 5.1 in the coming weeks and months.

Sprint’s software support page for the Nexus 6 says that the update to Android 5.1 (build LMY47D) is rolling out today, March 11. The update will include the new factory reset protection, enhancements in sending MMS messages in the UK, and fixes for a duplicate SMS bug. However, that’s just the Sprint version, and the actual Android 5.1 update from Google has tons of behind the scenes changes, tweaks, improvements and more to improve the devices performance and stability.

This morning Verizon Wireless finally announced they’ll carry the Nexus 6 as well. Along with the release date details Verizon confirmed the Nexus 6 will arrive tomorrow with Android 5.1 Lollipop installed out of the box. Meaning users won’t have to update to the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop.

This is great news for Verizon Nexus 6 buyers, but also means that those who’ve been enjoying a Nexus 6 from the Google Play Store, Motorola.com, or any of the other four major US carriers over the past few months can expect it to start rolling out today. The Nexus 6 Android 5.1 Lollipop update should start hitting devices today, and continue over the course of the next few weeks.

It’s worth noting that sadly all of Google’s updates are slow and staggered releases. They push out over the air updates in waves, and not everyone will get it today. Instead, it could be tomorrow, this weekend, or sometime next week. This isn’t our favorite way to receive updates, but it’s the way Google does things and there is now way around it until we start seeing the update arrive. Once it does, users can manually flash the update zip files, or the factory image using the link at the top of the page.

It appears that the Nexus 6 Android 5.1 Lollipop update should start arriving today, and we’ll update as we learn more details and see it actually arrive for users. Drop a comment below if you’ve received the over the air update.

I have installed android 5.0 on my nexus 4 and since then my phone has become just useless and I feel like switching over to some basic version phone after having spent thousands of rupees on this.
Hence pls send the 5.1 update asap on my nexus 4 device. Should I do factory reset before updating the lollipop version?
