Nexus 7 Android 4.4 KitKat Update Still Missing for Some

Published

on

Last week, Google started rolling out the Nexus 7 Android 4.4 KitKat update to the Wi-Fi only versions of the Nexus 7 2012 and Nexus 7 2013. And while some users have received the update, other users are saying that the Nexus 7 Android 4.4 KitKat update remains missing for them a week after Google’s announced the roll out.

On October 31st, Google finally debuted the Android 4.4 KitKat update that it first announced all the way back in September. The update, which debuted on the Nexus 5 just a few short days later, was also confirmed for a few Nexus devices including the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10. Google remained mum on the release dates, saying that it would roll the updates out at a later date.

Nexus-7-review-2013-003-575x330

Last Tuesday, Google announced that the Nexus 7 Wi-Fi and Nexus 10 Android 4.4 KitKat update roll outs were beginning that day, the first Android 4.4 KitKat updates for older devices. And while we warned users that the update process could take a week or more, it seems like a ton of Nexus 7 owners, of both the 2012 and 2013 models, still haven’t seen the OTA updates arrive for their devices.

Google Android updates typically take a week or more to roll out. However, by the end of the first week, there are typically only a few people left without the update. In the case of the Android 4.4 KitKat update, we’re seeing more than a few users complain about the lack of an update. Many of those complaints appear on Google’s Nexus Google+ page where Nexus 7 users have started asking questions of Google.

Nexus 7 review (2013) - 002

Some have speculated that issues prompted Google to halt the Android 4.4 KitKat roll outs though that remains unproven and unconfirmed. What is confirmed though is that plenty of users are still without the software a week after the roll out began.

Fortunately, there is a way to get the update right now, though only users with a little bit of know-how will be able to get the software on board. Last week, Google posted the factory images for the Wi-Fi versions of the devices, meaning, users can install the software themselves. Users can also pull the updates directly from Google’s servers to install manually and skip the OTA.

Interestingly, the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 LTE and HSPA+ Android 4.4 KitKat updates haven’t rolled out OTA either, though, the updates are available through Google’s developer site thanks to the factory images. Those OTA’s are expected to begin soon, especially now that the Verizon Moto X Android 4.4 KitKat update has begun.

Show me one screenshot of a 2013 nexus 7 Adam… To my knowledge nobody has gotten it, everyone is side loading! Just one screenshot is all I’m asking for, it will put my mind to ease.

I know a dozen people with the 2013 Nexus 7…and not one of them has received it.

The funny thing is that I live less than a mile from Google’s headquarters.

It’s just as well. Unless it has some feature you’re dying to get, it’s better to wait for the pioneers to take the arrows. I’ve been burned by Google updates.

Nope. No update, and yes, I have a wifi-only 2013 N7. On every site and forum I check, nobody else has it either, except of course that one troll who says he got it and that it’s the best or worst thing Ever!

Really disappointing to hear nothing at all from Google on this, and even more so to hear that the Moto X starts getting it today, OTA. If that’s true, it really burns.

I have a 2012 and 2013 WiFi Nexus 7 and a Nexus 4 in Belgium and haven’t had updates on any of them so far.

If by the this evening I haven’t seen the OTA notifaction even after refresh I guess I’ll sideload it, but I really don’t get why they would spread this so thinly.

Or maybe it’s as you seem to allude to, that they didn’t actually release the update for those devices yet. I frankly haven’t heard of anyone that I know to have those devices too, that they DID receive the update.

Received my update OTA last night for my wifi 2013 N7. It’s the 16S version of the build, so it looks as if Google did halt the rollout to fix a few bugs.

Of note: the updater said that it would be available wifi-only until November 23, so those with cell-enabled 7’s should start seeing their update very soon.

This is my first Nexus device after a couple of Samsungs and an HTC. I cannot put in words how impressed I am with vanilla Android, it runs flawlessly on my N4 and N7 (2013). But this fiasco with the updates is seriously frustrating… but NOTHING would make me go back to the dark side!

      • Michael Evans

        11/20/2013 at 9:55 am

Transparent launcher is not available on other devices yet. Seems to be a Nexus 5 differentiating feature, I’m sure we will get it in 4.4.1. In the mean time you can get that effect with Nova Launcher.

Nothing for either my 2013 Nexus 7, nor my Nexus 4 and I am in Houston. This is abhorrent and goes against everything Nexus devices stand for. Why is MotoX getting Kit Kat before any Nexus device?!!

  11. Stefan

    11/19/2013 at 4:50 pm

I sideloaded it last week on my 2012 nexus 7 but only a few minutes ago (12:40am UK,) I received a 1.4MB ota update to build krt16s which is newer than the one from last week so I would imagine there were problems found and then it was silently pulled before mass rollout.

While I enjoyed my first generation Nexus 7, my second generation has been a complete bust. I got one of the first ones, having pre-ordered it well in advance. I have had nothing but issues, esp. touch screen not responding, mysterious (and increasingly frequent) power-offs, etc. I’ve just been waiting to see if the latest release would fix anything, but just today I notified them I can’t use this thing any more. This has been a very unpleasant experience with Google.

    11/19/2013 at 6:18 pm

Actually the update hasn’t been released OTA. When Google said they began to roll out the update the meant they released the update on their developer site for manual update.

Yes, yes and yes. Though I would wait a year on 4.3 vs using anything else “nasty disgusting iOS” not gonna name any though… So I am willing to ride out the storm.

Bought my nexus 7 32gig day before announcement. Nothing Nada zilch is San Antonio. Google is being like a stripper all show and no substance. The power consumption of mine is horrendous. Use it sparenely during day and have charge all the time. Bought this because no bloatware and supposedly first inline updates.

    In my case…
Androïd 4.0 was 1 month late, 4.2 was two weeks late…
So I’m not surprised 4.4 is late too.
Google has no respect for its Nexus users.

No OTA yet for KitKat 4.4 for my Nexus 7 2013 here in Ghana and, reading all the comments above and elsewhere about the non-arrival of the KitKat 4.4 OTA, I am forced into thinking that Google has a lot to do to redeem its POOR IMAGE AS A CALLOUS, UNRESPONSIVE and IRRESPONSIBLE corporate body. For Google to bebave as if it is in no way aware of the complaints from its thousands of customers, across the globe, regarding the OTA matter, is OUTRIGHT and DESPICABLE DISRESPECT for its customers!!!!!! Any delay in Google coming out to INFORM us about the true situation regarding the OTE issue MUST CAUSES us to look elsewhere, the next time round.

Still no OTA for my nexus 7 Flo in the Netherlands. Two people I know and many others on dutch forums already had OTA. Previous OTA (4.3.1)) didn’t come also and sideloaded it after month of waiting.

I think OTA support for my device is broken. Clearing cache of Google Framework seems to help some, but cause much trouble to others. And is strongly advised not to do by Google enigineers.

So as far as I know there is non other solution then to factory reset (or reflash whole factory image) to get OTA working again.

Or….sideload every OTA manually from now on. Which is not a hard thing to do. The reason to go Nexus however was for those damn OTA’s.

Anyone have other idea to trigger OTA without losing all data due to reset?

I do NOT want the 4.4 until it is ready anyway. BUT just think how much searching these update issues have given Google. It’s a great strategy especially since 4.3 for me works great and I have not heard of any pressing reason to go with 4.4 early. Nexus 7 2013 here.

I am updated to 4.4 on my nexus 7 and it has almost killed my device. unresponsive screen issues and no Bluetooth volume control for Bluetooth devices. I’m about to have to revert… so I’d wait a bit if I were you guys! 4.3 was way more fast and stable for me.

4.4 has arrived in Brisbane Australia and installed. No issues that I have found so far. My BlackBerry has also updated too, and 3 other apps on Windows, so I am hard pressed to give any one of the systems my full attention. Later today I will also put V7 on my wife’s iPhone too. Maybe I’ll just go mow the grass and then read a book in the hammock under the trees.
