Nexus 7 Android 5.0.2 Lollipop Update Imminent

Published

on

While Google pushed out a Nexus 7 Android 5.0.1 update for the Nexus 7 2013, it has yet to offer the Android 5.0.1 update to owners of the Nexus 7 2012. Now we may know why. A Nexus 7 Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update has emerged at the Android Open Source project and an Android 5.0.2 release appears to be imminent for Nexus 7 users at the very least.

Last month, Google started rolling out its Android 5.0 Lollipop update, a major upgrade to its Android operating system that runs on millions of smartphones and tablets around the world. The Android 5.0 Lollipop update brought a brand new look called Material Design and some other sweeping changes that make it one of the biggest Android updates in the software’s history.

The Android 5.0 Lollipop update brought new features to many Nexus devices but it also delivered numerous Android 5.0 Lollipop problems to owners of the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, and Nexus 9. Slowly but surely, the company’s gotten around to fixing those issues and earlier this month, the company rolled out Android 5.0.1 Lollipop.

The Android 5.0.1 Lollipop update is a tiny update that’s meant to squash some of the initial Android 5.0 problems plaguing Nexus users. It’s currently rolling out to the Nexus 5, Nexus 4, and Nexus 6 and it’s rolled out to the Nexus 9, Nexus 10, and Nexus 7 2013. It has not yet rolled out to the Nexus 7 2012 or any of the cellular versions of the Nexus 7. And today, we think we found out why.

Google’s posted a mysterious Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update into the AOSP. The update is for the Wi-Fi version of the Nexus 7 2012 and it’s in the form of a factory image. The factory image will allow developers to go hands on with the software thanks to the sideloading process. It also means that an Android 5.0.2 OTA for the Nexus 7 2012 Wi-Fi is probably close. Assuming that this is not a mistake and it’s really an Android 5.0.2 update, not Android 5.0.1.

It’s not yet clear what the Android 5.0.2 update might have on board but we imagine that it will probably have a ton of bug fixes related to Android 5.0 Lollipop problems. Nexus 7 2012 users have been complaining for weeks about Android 5.0 problems and Android 5.0.2 could be the bug fix that Nexus 7 2012 Wi-Fi users are looking for.

The Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update hasn’t appeared for any other devices. Google still owes Android 5.0 Lollipop updates to the cellular versions of the Nexus 7 and it’s still not clear when those updates might roll out. Given the progress Google’s made in the past few weeks with Android 5.0 fixes, there’s a good chance that it will deem Android 5.0.2 stable enough for those devices. Release dates depend on the testing and certification process and the process tends to move a little slower when carriers are involved.

Android 5.0.1 fixes a number of big time issues including video playback problems with the Nexus 7 and a lock screen bug that has the potential to factory reset a device. It delivers over 20 bug fixes in all. It’s not clear what Android 5.0.2 will bring to the table though we imagine that the change log will be slightly different than the Android 5.0.1 update.

Google continues to push out Android 5.0.1 Lollipop to Nexus 4, Nexus 5, and Nexus 6 users and those updates will most likely continue on in the face of the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop release. Google’s been known to have different devices on different versions of software so a limited Android 5.0.2 release would not be unprecedented.

Nexus 7 2012 users will want to be on the look out for the update in the coming days as Google looks to improve the Android 5.0 Lollipop experience on its aging former flagship. Google’s OTA roll outs typically take a week or more to complete and the roll outs usually move out at random.

I have a 2012 Nexus7 and have been very unhappy with the constant problems since the 5 upgrade. On the previous 4.4 version everything worked perfectly. Now the Nexus 7 is very frustrating to use. I do hope they sort it soon otherwise I will revert to the previous version.

I’m still waiting the 5 upgrade on my 2012 Nexus 7 Wi-Fi. I’m still operating the 4.4 version. Anybody know why it’s taking so long to the update the new version on 2012 Nexus 7?

I installed the 5.0.2 update on a Nexus 7 2012 wifi and it did NOT fix the wifi issues, I had to give up hope and downgrade to 4.4.4. The thing has been worthless for over a month waiting for an update that downgrading seems the only choice we have.

I’m also on a 2012 nexus 7. Since receiving the ota upgrade to 5.0 the tablet has been mostly useless and very frustrating to use. In fact it’s hasn’t been much more than a paperweight. I hope the fix will arrive soon.

I’m certainly happy to see some movement on this issue. I should have known better that install 5.0 without waiting for reviews. Never again. 5.0 is a disaster on my Nexus 7 2012. Resets, lock, fail to load the most basic app!!!

Can’t wait for 5.0.2, quite a few of my apps and games stopped booting up after 5.0.0, hope it fixes that, thanks for the info ☺

With a little patience and TLC, it looks like 5.0.2 is going to solve the problems of 5.0.

I’ve had to endure the frustrations of Lollipop 5.0.2 on my Nexus 7 2012 for the last two weeks. It is rubbish!!!
Touch-screen response is slow; the screen often locks up completely; Chrome is becoming a joke to use as you never know when the device is going to completely lock up; I very often have to re-boot with a POR.

All in all, the update offers slow response, low sensitivity to touch, and intermittent operation. Please fix it – of give me my Kit Kat back.

5.0.2 update seemed to ruin my nexus 7 tablet!!!!! Very very upset!!! Honestly one of the lucky first to obtain one over 2 years ago!!! Happy with it’s performance, giving up my I touch and iPod… Never had an issue till now… So unhappy, the update rendered my tablet unusable… A paperweight… Basically a slow working mp3player!!! Did I mention I’m very very upset about this!!!!
