Nexus 7 & Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat Updates Closer Than Ever

Published

on

Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 owners have been wondering where their Android 4.4 KitKat updates are. After all, Google posted the factory images for the updates a few days ago, though, the Over-the-Air updates remain out of the reach. Today, Google posted new factory images for Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 owners, a sign that the Nexus 10, Nexus 7 and Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat OTA updates are extremely close.

Last week, we saw Google announce Android 4.4 KitKat update roll outs for the Nexus 7 Wi-Fi and the Nexus 10. The company also said that it would be rolling out updates for the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 7 HSPA+ and LTE in the near future though it declined to say when. Shortly after that announcement, Google put the Nexus 7 (HSPA+, LTE) and Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat update factory images and binaries on its developer site, a sign that an OTA update could be imminent. Until today, we hadn’t seen any new information emerge.

In fact, we heard today that many Nexus 7 owners were still without Android 4.4 KitKat, with many users speculating that Google had pulled the update, possibly due to issues. While we can’t confirm that last bit, we do have some brand new clues, clues that point to Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 Android 4.4 KitKat updates rolling out soon to users.

Google has posted new binaries and factory images for the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 to its developer page. The updates are for a new build, KRT16S, and it appears that it’s a small bug fix build for Nexus owners. While we can’t confirm anything, this could be why the OTA updates have been lagging. Google may have wanted to push this out before pushing out the OTAs.

The update is currently pushing out to some owners of the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 though it appears that the roll out is taking place slowly, in typical Google fashion.

With that in mind, it appears that we are now closer than ever the Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat update and the completion of the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 Android 4.4 KitKat upgrades.

Those who are willing to take the plunge can now do so by downloading the proper files from Google. Those with the know-how will skip from KRT16O to KRT16S. Those without the knowledge should wait for the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 Android 4.4 KitKat OTA updates as they will likely be right around the corner.

I sidloaded KitKat and then received this update. However, I don’t see all the new features. I still see black bars top and bottom, and the apps and widgets screens have black backgrounds like 4.3. Is this what everyone is seeing, or have my updates gone wrong?

I think you have to get something like the nova launcher app and adjust translucent settings or just look up how to do it..

I think you have to get something like the nova launcher app and it may have a translucent setting. Or just look up how to do it. I heard someone say this is what made it work..from a third party app

Kit Kat mojo is wearing off. Google must do a better job when updates occur, they should be rolled out immediately. A month is an eternity when it comes to mobile and they are already two months behind. They will end up losing market share to Apple and Windows.

Meh. It’s not even been a month since the N5 & KitKat were released at this point. They’re supporting multiple devices with different hardware from different manufacturers and ensuring it’s a safe, smooth upgrade for each device. They’ve got the N4, N5, N7-2012, N7-2013, N7-2013-LTE, N7-2012-LTE, N10 to worry about getting it right for.

Would you rather they’d withheld it from every device until every version was guaranteed to be bug free?

Factory images are available for all of them, and have been for some time. Anyone that desperate for the updates could have flashed those images long ago and stopped whining about them not coming soon enough.
