Nexus 8 and Android L Release Date Rumored

Published

on

Rumors continue to swirl suggesting Google has a new Nexus 8 or Nexus 9 tablet in the works, along with a new Nexus 6 smartphone, and this week another rumor surfaced claiming to know the HTC Nexus 9 release date.

While these rumors initially started out as a Nexus 8, more and more reports and rumors are pointing to a device which will be called the Nexus 9 instead. Last year Google announced the new Nexus 7 (2013) shortly after Google I/O event in May, and many expected the same this year, which sadly never arrived. Instead though, we may be getting something much better next month.

The first solid rumors started floating around in June after some HTC Nexus tablet rumors surfaced, but have since slowed down with all the Android L news, updates to Android 4.4.4 KitKat, and the purported Nexus 6 smartphone. After reports last week (linked to above) reportedly confirmed the HTC Nexus 9 was real and coming soon, today we have a potential announcement or launch date.

Android-L-Nexus5

Last week a huge leak arrived which potentially confirmed all the rumors we’ve heard thus far regarding Google’s plan for another Nexus tablet. For months we’ve been hearing an impressive 8.9-inch device was coming soon made by HTC, and that was reportedly confirmed.

NVIDIA, the hardware and graphics manufacturer, released some legal documents which confirm the device. In a 65 page court document one paragraph talking about their impressive quad-core mobile processor for high-end tablets, the NVIDIA K1, was going to be the processor inside the “HTC Nexus 9 Tablet” which was also listed as coming in Q3 of 2014. The third quarter ends when September does, and the latest leak today suggests they’ll only miss that mark by a few weeks.

Popular Android developer and enthusiast Paul O’Brien posted to Twitter that his anonymous source has confirmed not only the HTC Nexus 9 launch date, but the Android L release as well.

According to his sources Google will be announcing the all-new HTC Nexus 9 tablet on October 16th, and later he confirms that naturally it will debut with the new Android 4.5 or 5.0 operating system that’s currently being called Android L. He returns to confirm this isn’t the release date, but the initial announcement.

This means that (if accurate) Google will announce the new HTC Nexus 9, likely the Nexus 6 smartphone they’ve been working on with Motorola, and Android L all in October. Last year Google debuted Android 4.4 KitKat and the Nexus 5 on October 31st, and it arrived within a few weeks to Nexus users around the globe. We could see the same thing in 2014, with the new Nexus devices and the newest version of Android all arriving around the end of October, or the first weeks of November.

It’s worth noting that last year his “anonymous source” suggested a release date for the Nexus 5, which ended up being wrong, so we’re taking this news with a grain of salt. That being said, he’s been accurate in the past with other things, and last year could have been correct initially but plans are always subject to change. At no point does he mention a new Nexus smartphone, but it’s been rumored and leaked far more than the tablet, so it makes sense we’ll see both at the same time.

Launching a brand new flagship smartphone with a completely overhauled version of Android is no simple task, and Google’s been working very hard on the Android L release, and apparently two new Nexus devices to showcase it on. So what can we expect from the Nexus 9 and Nexus 6? Here’s what we know based on a few leaks, benchmark results, and rumors from the past month or two.

Nexus 9 Specs (Rumored)

  • 8.9-inch 2048 x 1440 Full HD display (4:3 aspect ratio)
  • NVIDIA Tegra K1 Quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM (64-bit)
  • 16/32GB storage configurations
  • Android 4.5 or 5.0 (L Release)
  • 8 Megapixel OIS rear and 3 MP front camera
  • Zero-gap aluminum unibody design
  • HTC signature front facing speakers

Nexus 6 Specs (Rumored)

  • 5.2-inch 2560 x 1440 Quad-HD Display
  • 2.7 GHz Snapdragon 805 Quad-core Processor with 3GB of RAM
  • 24GB of storage (probably 32GB, with some being used)
  • 13 Megapixel Rear Camera with OIS, 2.1 Front
  • Android L Release
  • Usual WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, and more
  • Built by Motorola
  • Front Facing Speakers like the Moto X

A few small rumors have been swirling suggesting that Google won’t call it the Nexus 6, and instead it will be the Nexus 5 again, or a new Nexus name completely. This being because the screen isn’t 6-inches, and that Nexus 6 has already been trademarked by another company outside the mobile field. For now nothing is completely certain, but it looks like things are finally starting to take form.

Again, last year a new Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat were both announced on the last day of October, and arrived a few weeks later. If the same general release style of Google happens this year, we could see a new Nexus smartphone, Nexus 9 tablet, Android 4.5 or 5.0 L, and possibly more all next month.
