Nexus Player Release Date Confirmed

Last week Google took a few minutes to make some major announcements with its brand new Nexus 6 smartphone, the Nexus 9 tablet, and a surprise new Nexus Player. The companies first Android TV device. Rumors had confirmed the smartphone and tablet, but the Player was a surprise unveiling.

Along with the Nexus 9 tablet, on Friday the 17th Google put the Nexus Player up for pre-order but quickly removed the listing due to some FCC certification issues, but it’s now back and ready to roll for those interested, and that isn’t all the new Nexus Player Play Store listing revealed.

The Nexus Player cleared the FCC this weekend, and this afternoon Google has re-listed it on the Google Play Store for $99, taking pre-orders now, and also confirmed the release date. Read on for more details regarding the all-new Nexus Player.

Similar to an Apple TV or the Amazon Fire TV, Google’s new Nexus Player is a small and thin round device that simply connects to a power source and your TV through HDMI. Everything is controlled with a neat and sleek remote control, as well as an optional Nexus game controller to enjoy the thousands of Android games right from your TV.

Android TV, the operating system that’s running on the Nexus Player includes a home screen that allows users to browse through custom-made recommendations based on what they’ve watched already and browse through more playable content through the Google Play Store. Apps downloaded from the Google Play Store enable access to new content at launch there will be apps for Hulu Plus, Plex, Netflix and YouTube.

The Nexus Player will also be able to download and play tons of Android games and apps using a powerful 1.8 GHz Intel Atom processor, and the game controller which is still not yet available.

Today Google updated the Play Store and while they didn’t give an exact release date, they’ve confirmed the Nexus Player will begin shipping to buyers in the next 3-4 weeks.

The Nexus Player is more than just a media streaming box, as it has all the same functions as the popular Chromecast that was announced and released last year along with the Nexus 7. Meaning that users can wirelessly and instantly stream pictures, videos, games, apps, and anything else from their smartphone or tablet to the Nexus Player (and their HDTV) all using a simple app and a wireless network connection from home.

Google initially stated a November 3rd release date for the Nexus Player, but now it appears that all orders will start shipping in 3-4 weeks from today.
