No Surprise: HP Delays Android Tablet

Published

on

All Things Digital is reporting that HP will be delaying the expected Q4 launch of an Android Tablet. Anyone surprised? Not me.

HP has closed its deal with the Palm acquisition and I’m sure there are lots of “what do we do first” conversations going on when it comes to Tablets and slates due to that. HP could go multiple ways with WebOS, Android, or Windows, or it could choose which battle to fight first.

Unlike others, I think the only thing we’ll see the end of this year is a lot of announcements and not shipping products of what will come by the end of this year. So, I think HP is in good company. Sure, we’ll see a few releases or products, but I just don’t think the floodgates will open until after we hit 2011. CES 2011 will be a weird replay of 2010 when the “Year of the Tablet” was christened.

Speaking of Tablets and Slates, check out this not really complete summary of some of the products announced already this year. I expect we’ll see more of that in 2011.

I got a revolutionary idea for HP. How about just make 1 tablet and let the user choose android or webOS? It would be even better if win7 could be an option, but since that requires and x86 processor, it’s unlikely.

Good thought Ben. I thnk Win7 will have to be on its own not only for X86 compatibility, but because it is so painfully obvious that there are a lot of kinks in the “teased” HP Slate they kept filling the Youtubes with between the iPad announcement and launch. I also think you hit the nail on the head Warner – lots of “Coming Soon” announcements between now and year end, but little to show for it until at least Q1 2011.

I have to say that I suspect HP is right.

Who would buy an Android or WebOS tablet with the same form factor as the iPad unless it was way cheaper?

Most of the critiques of the iPad (namely it is not a PC) will be equally valid for an Android or WebOS machine. USB or SD slots and the ability to play Flash will not matter.

Android and WebOS machines will still be a closed system that does not run Windows, and which will thus rely on apps to provide basic functionality.

    Apps which the iPad owns.

IMHO,the only real marketing opening is the one that the manufacturers are running away from. A tablet with the form factor of an iPad, but which runs Windows 7 so you can use Office/Photoshop etc.

With a keyboard dock and a real touch overlay. And a stylus.

You can’t beat Apple at their game. I love my iPad and can’t for the ife of me imagine why I’d get another machine that does the same thing but less well.

However, as a long time tablet user, I would love my main laptop to do what I described above.

A modern TC1100, in other words.
