Nokia 808 PureView Hands On

Published

on

The Nokia 808 PureView, while not a juggernaut of a device, is certainly one of the more interesting smartphones of 2012. The reason is, it sports an absolutely massive 41 mega-pixel camera with a Carl Zeiss sensor.

We were able to go hands-on with the Symbian-powered (you read that right) Nokia 808 PureView at CTIA 2012 in New Orleans and while the design and the software leave something to be desired, we couldn’t help but leave impressed by the camera and the future it has on Windows Phone devices.

The first thing you notice when looking at the Nokia 808 PureView is the phone’s massive camera which is situated on the top-middle part of the back-side of the device. It’s hard to understate how big this camera is and you can get a really good glimpse at it in the video below.

We came away impressed with how the camera performed and the amount of detail that the phone was able to provide was nothing short of amazing. Those who are avid photographers and even those who take their phone out a lot of snap photos will have an interest in this technology.

Thing is, the phone is running Symbian and not Microsoft’s Windows Phone which is the platform that Nokia’s Lumia series has on board. Symbian is not exactly our favorite operating system as its sluggish and not as polished as other OS’. There is a reason why this device will likely be the last device to play host to Symbian. But hey, at least it has Symbian Belle which may just be the best iteration yet.

Luckily, Nokia has confirmed that PureView camera technology will be coming to Windows Phone so while the Nokia 808 PureView is intriguing, it’s probably not the phone you’re going to want for the long haul.

As for the design of the phone, it’s nothing to write home about. It’s bulky and not very interesting but it’s hard to expect much when the camera sensor is that gigantic. It’s not going to win any design awards but that’s not the intent here.

Rounding out the device, it comes with it sports a single core, 1.3GHz processor, 16GB of built-in storage, a microSD slot that can take up to a 32GB microSD card, a 1,440 mAh battery, and 512MB of RAM.

It will be coming to Europe this month and it appears that it will be coming to the United States at some point in the future as well.

Such a wonderful device, and yet, the interviewer probably knows more about it than the woman showcasing the device. COME ON. Nokia should be ashamed. Besides the camera, there are many more things this phone can do.

Belle… running ON TOP of symbian. ORLY?

4:3 =/= less resolution, much less in the 808. And Belle is not sluggish. She doesn’t know how to use the menu either :(…. I had to stop the video halfway cuz its really sad.

As Xavier said, the latest iteration of Symbian (Belle FP1) is not sluggish at all, in fact it’s quite snappy, and excellent for customisation if you’re at all geeky.

This phone is a game changer because of the Pureview technology. It puts Nokia’s camera years ahead of any competitor, and if you don’t want to carry around a compact camera, the 808 is the device to get. It’s essentially a camera that can make phone calls :-)
