Nokia X Rumored as $99 Android Smartphone

on

The Nokia X smartphone is reportedly coming to market soon and will be announced later this month during Mobile World Congress. It will likely be Nokia’s first smartphone running on Google’s Android operating system.

After initial leaks and rumors suggested a rather mid-range smartphone with less than stellar specs, new details today are painting a different picture for the Nokia Normandy handset. While it’s been all but confirmed that Nokia won’t be using Google’s services like Gmail or the Google Play Store for apps, and will use its own options, at least the phone could arrive with a compelling price point.

Today various reports are swirling, including one from WinSource stating the Nokia X Android smartphone will launch at $99 in March, and could possibly be even less. According to a few Vietnamese online retailers the Nokia Android device could actually cost under $100 when it launches.

While we’ve been following along with the leaks on this midrange handset, price was the last detail that was still left unknown. Offering a 4-inch 480 x 854 resolution display the device certainly isn’t high end, but comes with Android 4.4.2 KitKat and a dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor on board with 512MB of RAM and only 4GB of internal storage.

Other specs include a 5 megapixel camera and promising looking battery life. The device sounds decent, but for a stock Android experience at that price you could get the 720p HD 4.5-inch Moto G, linked to above.

Nokia has never released an Android smartphone, and it’s still unknown if the upcoming Nokia X will even come to the US. That being said, if Nokia can deliver a fast and smooth experience for under $99 without a contract, some users could be swayed to pick one up, not to mention first-time smartphone buyers will give the Nokia X a look.

While it can’t quite give the Moto G a run for its money, the Nokia X is sounding more and more like a decent budget smartphone.
