Nook Color 1.2 Update Reseting Devices without Notice, Won’t Re-register & No Wi-Fi

Published

on

The Nook Color was updated this week to firmware 1.2 with a new app store and some improved apps as well as Android 2.2 FroYo OS. Unfortunately many users including me are having problems with the device resetting itself without warning, thus erasing the device. The Barnes and Noble community forums has a thread with a handful of people reporting that their device was mysteriously reset without warning.

Nook Color Resets itself after update

Compounding the problem many of those devices being reset are also not able to connect to the B&N network to be registered again, essentially bricking the device until the company finds a fix. As you can see from the above picture my Nook Color is affected.

This is not a problem related to being rooted. I flashed my Nook Color back to the original firmware before performing the manual update that Josh posted about. Everything went well and I even was able to provide some video for you to see how nice the update was. Sadly, today is a different story.

Have you experienced this issue? If so, did you do a manual update? My guess is that the B&N network is to blame pushing the update out again even though some devices didn’t need it. Then with devices trying to re-register the device their network troubles were compounded with another glitch!

Once there is a resolution we’ll let you know. If we find out what happened, we will also let you know that.

Until then, we recommend that you not update manually to the new 1.2 firmware.

UPDATE: In addition to the above issues, there seems to be a problem with Wi-Fi connections after the update. Like the many folks in the Barnes & Noble community forums, I am unable to connect to my Wi-Fi network intermittently. Often no networks are shown as available. Suddenly they are seen by the Nook Color and then they go away.

Connection to the store is lost. Web is ok, posting from NOOK color now.

That’s me – my wifi is fine, but I can’t connect to the B&N store. *sigh* So irritating.

My Nook has been out for the passed 5 hours, and I haven’t manually updated anything, but was excited to do so… When I called Tech Support, they said we would be back up and running in an hour, that was four hours ago… when I called again, they said the aren’t sure when they will be back up… unaccpetable.

I too lost everything on my nook, and it reset as though it was the first time on, asking me to begin all over again. When I go on line I can see my books, telling me to download though when I select download nothing happens. I’m sure this is a problem with B&N. I called the tech support, though each time the tech gets to the part of the conversation that I will follow their directions, I am cut off and lose the call.

I just got off the phone with Barnes and Noble’s Nook Color customer service, and they acknowledge the problem is affecting all Nook color devices, and told me to wait at least 24 hours for them to work out the problems with their tech team. Way to go with your beta testing.

I just spent an hour with tech support (mostly on hold) and finally got a supervisor who discovered that the servers are undergoing maintenance and won’t be back up for several hours. He was just as surprised as I was.

I find it insane that they didn’t tell their tech support this when it went into effect….I actually returned my first NOOK Color and exchanged it at Best Buy upon the advice of BN tech support, as they thought the factory reset loop was an isolated issue……

I am really glad I don’t work their support phones right now. They must be losing their minds.

I wish I was lying when I say this, but it happens more often than you may think. I manage a national call center for a software company and it does happen. We do not wreak havoc like this… but we have been known to do stupid things in the past as a part of human oversight.

Having said that, I am FURIOUS that this happened! I had mine updated to v1.1.0 and Rooted with AutoNooter3.0. I did not accept anything that told me it was going to update, it just flashed the “I Must Reset This Device” message and then it FACTORY RESET!!!! WTF kind of logic is that?!!?

This happened to me this afternoon. I just spoke with nook color technical help and they said the reset was a maintenance situation and that we should be able to re-register in about 2-3 hours.

My color nook reset it self to the beginning of setting up the nook. I also tried to register and though the wifi is connected the nook will not do anything. Called B&N techs and they know about this problem but could not help and told me to call later and see if they have a fix.

  9. FutureWarning

    04/27/2011 at 8:36 pm

Can not use Nook Color at all. This is not acceptable. I do not want overpaid execs in control of any item I own. I do not want any item I own connecting to or doing anything without my explicit permission. Any company system that allows this is a problem to begin with. If this type of intrusive programming is not stopped now there will be major problems later that will affect more than the ability to use items that were purchased.

There’s something else going on here. Lack of server connectivity doesn’t affect clients. Something TOLD those devices to reset and delete data.

B&N stocks might be interesting in the morning. ;-)

I ended up here after doing a manual update of my nook color. After the update, it says wifi connects and I can web browse but no store (including apps) for me.

These android based tablets are like the bad old days of windows 95 where you said a prayer, sacrificed a goat and crossed your fingers that your computer would restart after an update

I spent 40 minutes on hold to be told that yes they knew, and yes, it’s been going on for a while now. I mentioned maybe posting this on their site so the users don’t clog the phone lines calling for help.

This happened to me this afternoon as well. I looked away from my Nook for a few minutes and when I glanced back it was resetting and deleting all of my data….ugh! I never even installed the update. It looks like I may breakdown and get that Ipad.

  17. Leonardo_DelVecci

    04/27/2011 at 9:23 pm

Okay… I think there are larger issues here.
What you own and what you do not own. And what other people may do with your property, WITHOUT your consent.

When you purchase any electronic device, that device is yours. If any third party is capable of EXTERNALLY causing that device to reset, or to EXTERNALLY manipulate that device without your approval, or remove any of your property which you store on that device, then in reality you no longer own that device.
You are merely renting that device subject to the whims of whomever holds the licensing to it.

    That is absolutely WRONG.

IF the reset was NOT CAUSED by a malicious third party, and if the ability to essentially “brick” your Nook Color was something included by Barnes & Noble for control, then there are substantial legal issues here that will eventually wind up being addressed.

Finaly a voice of reason! I was flamed big time on the nook facebook for mentioning this fact!

    • Bill Kress

      04/28/2011 at 2:50 pm

Although I personally agree with you, fact is we’re wrong. You don’t buy most software anymore (the stuff inside the nook is still software) you license it. They make it look like you are buying it, but if you read the fine print, no matter how much you paid I’m guessing that you do not in any way own the software inside this device–in fact there’s a good chance you don’t own the device.

It sucks, but it’s our fault for buying devices and assuming the things you said above.

Of course we don’t have much of an option since every device tends to be licensed in the same way.

All you can do is hope that people will notice and stop buying, but I don’t see any indication they will.

I am so sad, as I’ve only had my Nook Color for a mere 5 days (just enough time to fall in love, and be completely hooked) before this “little” hiccup. I would be content regarding the internet wifi issue if I were able to access the books I own… @Leonardo is correct, clearly we are merely renting and that is not so cool with me. :(

I suppose I can’t still return my Nook to Best Buy. We’ll see… I’d be bitterly disappointed.

This is just insane – the manufacturer does a %^$& poor job compared to the development community in transitioning to Android 2.2 (check out XDA-Developers) – I even toyed with their Honeycomb ROMS that were better than what B&N just rolled out…

    :( I have a useless nook too.
First I tried to manually download the new software. When that didn’t work I went to my local B&N. (I wasn’t the only one). They tried to fix it for over an hour and couldn’t figure it out.So they suggested calling the 800 number. I got a representative fairly quickly and he immediatly acknowlegded the problem. He was very apologetic yet had no answers. I can’t be mad at any of them, but damn it, I’m mad! I want to check all the new stuff lol This blows. He said to try and call back in a few hours if my home screen doesn’t appear. Soooo disappointing.

I had the ill fortune to just buy my Nook, after pretty careful research, only about an hour and a half ago today. Brought it home all excited, unwrapped it, and got exactly three steps into the process of turning it on, and it’s a 250 dollar paperweight. Truly shameful stuff, B and N.

I give it exactly 2 hours before I’m back in the car and demanding money back at the store. Will get that Galaxy Tab I wanted, anyway.

This problem may ultimately be due to the wireless update being pushed out, but it does not matter if you manually updated your nookcolor or not. I had devices that were NOT manually updated, as well as ones that were, reset on me today. We were able to continue updating the devices, but are encouraging people to turn off their wi-fi. If it has not happened to you yet, just turn your wi-fi off and wait for them to figure this server mess out. I received a less than promising “hope to have it online later this evening”. We’ll see.

I’m a little concerned about how protected our credit card info they store on their site will be, It wiped out everything though when I registered all of my info to turn the nook back on, they already had the credit-card info without me re-entering it. A card number I had only given since I had purchased the nook.

    • cmkm

      04/27/2011 at 11:13 pm

When you first registered your nook and put your credit card info in, it has been saved to your account online for purchasing payment. Once you register it again, everything that’s on your BN account will sync back up..

My Dad picked up one for my Mom for Mother’s Day two days ago, and the guy at the store did the update there. I went to check it out today, and got the WiFi network error. Google led me to here. I guess I’ll just have to wait to play around with it. Anyone worried about losing apps they paid for, don’t worry. The apps will be gone, but you can reinstall for free from the market (instead of a “buy” link, it shows an “install” link). At least that’s what I’ve had to do with my Android enabled phone.

      04/28/2011 at 7:04 am

That is the case, all of my purchased applications (mostly free ones) showed up in the applications area with “INSTALL” banners on the bottom of them. All of my books synced up within minutes, and my oldest son was reading the new and improved “Are you my mother?” book. All is right with the world, in fact the sync even saved my bookmarks, annotations and highlights – considering the price of admission and this is the first issue I have had I for one can’t complain. I lost nothing except for the few minutes to put in my WiFi password, B&N username and password, and clicking install on a few apps…

I’m sure the people that have had everything they worked for being literally torn apart (and their lives endangered) by a tornado feel your pain. Um forums are for people with a common interest. It allows them to share ideas and opinions. This particular one is for a problem with the nook. If you don’t have one then I have to wonder why you’re on here in the first place. I appreciate everyone “whining” about there nook. Since B&N couldn’t give me an answer at least their “whining” let me know I wasn’t the only one encountering this problem. That it’s a much larger problem then I can solve. It may not be nearly as big of a problem as a natural disaster but it still is a problem. It’s best to come on here and “vent” then to take it out on a CSR.

Me too. Still no login. I updated manually, and it wiped itself twice. The first time, I caught it by turning it off mid stream. This time I am left with nothing. Tech support said, “wait” and implied I should pick up a book. I would like to, but most of mine were on this. At least it does not have a camera that we know of. Maybe to pay for this, BN will give us all a free copy of 1984.

This happened to me today too. I immediately called tech support and they treated me like an idiot, telling me to reset it about five times before I told her it just wasn’t happening. Then she finally took my information and told me, “Oh, we are having difficulties, try again in about an hour or three.” Three hours later I call back and get a different person, he told me to wait 24 hours and that I didn’t lose my books and that it should all be on there like usual. I doubt that.

Your Nookcolor is reset, but everything that you’ve purchased through BN is saved to your BN account online. Once the server is back up, you’ll be able to put your email + password back in and everything on the account will just sync up and download again.

I’m one of those people who always waits a few days, to see if other people are having problems, first.

But this does seem like very poor testing by B&N, too many people are having problems, they should have caught it before they put the update out there.

  49. Kaitlyn

    04/28/2011 at 12:06 am

According to B&N forums…. the problem was caused to stop the rooting companies. Sounds like a good reason but it’s frustrating all the legitimate NC users. Come on B&N step up the game!!!

I saw them advertise it on hsn the other night… and I feel so sorry for you guys especially when they told you guys that you would be the first ones to the the update. :( Little did they realize that they were selling you a device that was going to have an issue. :(

ok i fixed mine! yayyyy maybe this method can help some of you :D i turned off my nook then turned it back on and followed the instructions to enter factory mode, only using the ‘enable factory mode’ and ‘skip oobe’ instructions (https://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Factory_Mode/Skip_Out_of_Box_Experience). once on again, i went to ‘settings’, ‘device info’, then ‘erase and deregister device’ (caution: this will erase your device! you’ll have to re-download everything). the nook rebooted and when it went to the set-up again i was able to register with no problems. i’m so excited, i really needed it for tomorrow :D

ps, i fixed my sister’s nook earlier (before i knew this was a widespread problem) by simply messing with the wifi router and connection for about 30min. it finally let her register but when she got on again all her stuff was deleted. so to me its looking like no matter how you go about this, you’re going to have to re-download all your stuff. way to go b&n!

WARNING about loading apps after the reset. I manually updated on Monday and several of us had problems with loading new applications (Angry birds and others). I spent an hour with Nook customer NO SERVICE…completely clueless technicians. They transfered me 3 times and the “experts” said the problem was with my home wifi and then they told me to call the Angry Birds developer. (and like others who posted, I was conveniently disconnected from the call).

Bottom line: IT TURNS OUT MANY APPS WON’T INSTALL IF YOU HAVE AN SD CARD IN THE NOOK!!!!!

I’m furious with nook right now!

I had turned my nook off for several hours. I recently turned it back on and I had to re-register then low and behold everything was back to what it had been before crazy time. My book was even on the book marked page I had left it on, I think maybe they may have back-dated to before the update.
I’m a little concerned about downloading the update. Not going to update until I’m sure they have worked out the mess.

I shoulda known something was going to happen. I have a MacBook and when I went to side load my mom’s NC it told me that it couldn’t decompress the file (standard thing for a Mac).

    UPDATE: It is fixed!!!!!!

Was having problems connecting to the BN store after doing manual update. Went in a few minutes ago to buy a book and it just works again. The village is saved!

Servers appear to be back UP! At least for me.
NC did another reset, then allowed me to register. Back to 1.2 but I’m also back to when I manually updated yesterday. That’s OK. I didn’t have that much.
I turned off WiFi for now. Just in case B&N fix is not stable.
    Thanks Kevin for this site.
It helped me to know that there was a problem and that its was ‘them’ not ‘me’. I hope we can now resume our NC lives.

Mine just came back, Without all my own files! Had just finished setting it up for vacation now it’s all gone! At least the Reader still works. Now I have to go back out and get all the files I had copied (Maps Schedule and such) and put them back on. I also need to find my place in the middle of my book. Just what the heck happened. If it happens again and I cannot get to a WiFi connection the thing is a brick and will have no books.

If there’s no other way, then you could still root your nook, or through clockworkMod, you can delete the 1.2 update from your nook software, then install the 1.1 software that was originally on it and try all over again(still requires root).

The Nook color is virtually unbrickable because it always tries to boot from SD first. There’s plenty of forums out there that can help you with this. And while your at it, try out the Rooted Nook Color and some of the Mods people have out there for you!

Not sure if this will help anyone, but if your files are still there and the problem is just that you’re locked out of registering, you can boot from SD and access the internal memory directly to copy your files, as described here:

My nook reset itself (crappy and law-suit ready idea!!) yesterday…I went to my local B&N store and they apologized for the problem…no help there. My machine displays the network issue mentioned above and I cannot access anything in my library. So much for beta testing, and alpha testing (like someone else posted)…how about NO testing if this is the result…millions of pissed off customers with bricked machines! A smart B&N exec would rapidly come up with some gift for all nook users which might avert a series of lawsuits. Then again, a smart B&N exec probably signed off on the new software push!!!

Just FYI — but this isn’t limited to the Nook Color any more. My regular Nook “updated” last night and reverted back to a factory reset “brick.” It is extremely frustrating.
