OCZ Neutrino DIY Netbook Gets Reviewed

on

At the end of March, we brought you news of a new player in the netbook market that raised a few eyebrows. What set this netbook apart from the rest of the pack wasn’t its stellar design, groundbreaking processor, or any breathtaking innovation. Rather, the OCZ opted to let end users customize the netbook based on their needs for storage, RAM, and OS. I4U.com has just released their review of the netbook and found that the netbook holds its own against the major players but does not offer much more than customizability without voiding your warranty. Although originally quoted at $269, the netbook actually sells for $289. The keyboard was considered a bit cramp but is par for the segment and the battery life was found to be good for roughly 2 hours of run time.

On the battery front alone, I know the Neutrino is not a viable option for me. I’d rather have a device weighing a pound more if it means I can be mobile all day. Considering Samsung, Asus, MSI, and HP all have extended batteries that can last up to 10 hours, OCZ’s lack of an extended battery option eliminates it from contention. Why make a device small and portable if you can’t use it for more than a couple of hours and forces you to be tethered to a power outlet?

So what do you think? Has OCZ hit the mark with this one or is the lack of a complete ready-to-use-out-of-the-box netbook not worth the hassle?

I have to agree the battery issue is a show stopper for most people I know. This little gem would not be the ticket for me since I want to get 6 to 8 hours of operation out of a thin netbook. Other than that it looks like a nice addition from OCZ.
