OneNote 2010 Getting Short Shrift in Early Office 2010 Coverage

onenote2010logoI really shouldn’t be surprised that OneNote 2010 is getting short shrift in the early coverage of Microsoft Office 2010. After all, Microsoft succeeded in keeping OneNote a super secret application for so long, that it has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you scan the coverage (again it is still early) there is very little mention of OneNote 2010. Long Zheng has the teaser video up on istartedsomething, and beyond that there are few mentions of it that I’ve seen beyond that it is included and will be a part of   web apps suite.

All of that said, much of the focus is obviously going to be on the web implementation (that’s the sexy news in the battle with Google) Word, Excel and Powerpoint, which are the big three in the Office suite.   But if you’ve followed my rantings and musings here for any time you’ll know that I feel like OneNote is the killer app that Microsoft really hasn’t wanted anyone to know about for quite some time.   Here’s hoping that changes soon.

I think this reflects the general trends of today’s workplace–it’s more about creating stuff than the best practices for the workflow that sustains it. Microsoft Office is supposedly a “productivity suite” but really docs, presentations, spreadsheets, and email are our core work and not special productivity apps. OneNote, on the other hand, IS for productivity in note-taking, research, and certain types of collaboration.

It’s sad that OneNote still isn’t getting the attention it deserves. I do kind of wonder if it weren’t for the Tablet whether OneNote would’ve existed…as that’s where most OneNote marketing had been focused. Of course, you and I know that that’s just the tip of the iceberg. (Though you’re still an active Tablet PC user and I still live in OneNote even without a Tablet for my last two notebooks).

There is one saving grace in the announcement, in case you missed this tidbit…

OneNote will be a part of ALL Office 2010 product SKU’s. :)

Well, to be honest, the Onenote team has severely screwed up ON 2010. The interface has a lot of wasted space- very important in a tablet- and it takes 2-3 times more clicks to perform common tasks than in ON 2007. Very disappointing. This may be the first Office release I entirely skip. And that’s a pretty sad conclusion from an ergonomics consultant that lives in Office…

Apart from collaboration and the web versionn there look to be very few new features in ON 2010.
