OnePlus 5 Rumors Take Aim at Galaxy S8

With high-end smartphones like the LG G6 or Galaxy S8 coming soon, leaks and rumors are starting to emerge about the competition. The first that comes to mind is OnePlus, who won over millions of customers in 2016. Now, recent reports suggest an all-new OnePlus 5 is coming soon to take on the Galaxy S8.

The OnePlus 3 is arguably one of the best price to performance phones on the market, and a viable alternative to the Galaxy S7 or iPhone. The company is getting more popular each and every year, and looks to continue that trend in 2017.

Once labeled as a “flagship smartphone killer” OnePlus has big plans for their next phone. A report from Korea suggests it will be called the OnePlus 5, have a curved display like Samsung, and tons of other changes. As a result it may compete directly with far more expensive smartphones released this year. Read on for more details.

For those unaware, late last year the company released the OnePlus 3T. A smartphone with a big 5.5-inch display, the latest processor, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and nearly stock Android. Essentially the same specs and features as Google’s Pixel XL, but for only $439. As a comparison, Google’s Pixel XL retails for $769.

These phones are considered “budget devices” but are as premium as anything else released. Which is why they continue to gain popularity with Android users. So what’s next for the company and their “flagship killer” smartphone, here’s the latest rumor.

OnePlus 5 Rumors

A report from Korea believes to have some solid first information about what’s coming in 2107. Apparently it will be called the OnePlus 5, and not the four. That’s because many consider the 3T to be their fourth high-end device, and the number four is also considered bad luck in their home country.

That said, the name isn’t important. Instead, the important details are the new dual curved display that aims to take on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. It may feature similar small bezels to go along with the rounded edges on both sides of the screen. Additionally, we’re hearing the company will use the latest Snapdragon 835 processor, add 6-8GB of RAM, and potentially increase the storage as well. Offering 128GB as the base model and sell a more expensive 256GB OnePlus 5 too. A great alternative to the incoming iPhone 8, even.

Other details suggest a 23 megapixel rear and 16 megapixel set of cameras, and maybe even dual cameras on the back. Not to mention USB Type-C, the world’s fastest Dash Charging speeds, and a new all-ceramic body. Rather than use metal, the company may look to use a new ceramic, metal and glass design.

The company may also increase the built-in battery to 4,000 mAh for all-day battery life. As a comparison, the OnePlus 3T has a large 3,400 mAh battery currently. In closing, the device will likely follow the recent trend of adding IP68 dust and water-resistance. If the company can manage all of this while remaining under $500, like all of their phones, it should give the Galaxy S8 a run for its money.

This is all just a rumor for now, one that needs to be taken with a grain of salt. At the same time, OnePlus continues to improve each year, match the competition in specs for a lower price, and we’re expecting that to continue in 2017.

Either way, the Galaxy S8 will be released in April, far ahead of the OP5. The company usually releases phones later in the year, but we’ll have to wait and see. Stay tuned for more details.

The big question? Will the Plus CDMA be covered for Verizon. If you want a killer phone make it compatible with any network.
