Plantronics Voyager 5200 Review: Smart Bluetooth Headset

Published

on

The Plantronics Voyager 5200 is a smart Bluetooth headset designed for professionals who need a comfortable, great sounding headset that can dramatically reduce background noise and wind noise.

If you spend hours on the phone and can’t always close a door to get to a silent location, this is the headset that you need to wear on your ear.

On top of impressive noise cancelling abilities there are sensors that know when the Plantronics Voyager 5200 is on your ear or when it is sitting in a bag or on a desk. This eliminates the frustration of answering a call on your phone and still having audio routed to your bag.

The Plantronics Voyager 5200 is an amazing Bluetooth headset that cancels out a lot of background noise.

The Voyager 5200 is $119 for the headset, and there is an optional charging case for $40 that can deliver two more charges on the go, and act as a desktop charger when you aren’t mobile. If you’re looking for something more dedicated to music or working out, check out the Plantronics BackBeat Go 3.

I tested this in place of my wired iPhone headphones over a week of calls at home, in coffee shops and on a busy street corner and throughout all the environments I remained impressed with what Plantronics delivers.

Overall the voice quality is very good with the Plantronics Voyager 5200. While standing on a busy street corner it wasn’t until a massive and loud semi truck ground to a stop and then lumbered on that the caller on the other end of the phone heard the traffic, and even that was muted compared to what I heard.

Multiple microphones allow the Voyager 5200 to kill background noise.

There are four active microphones that use digital signal processing to pick up your voice and kill off background noise with astounding precision. The Plantronics Voyager 5200 also uses these to cut out wind noise on the street and in the car.

While talking to one coworker who I normally speak to with wired headphones and FaceTime Audio he noted a decrease in sound quality from that setup, but appreciated the noise cancelling. Most callers I spoke to reported little if any background noise and good call quality.

Use the case as a desktop charger connected to power, or charge from the battery.

The Plantronics Voyager 5200 is comfortable to wear for extended periods, and with seven hour battery life you can wear this basically all day. The battery life matches up to this claim and there is an optional battery charging case that can deliver 2 additional full charges.

Both the case and the headphone charge with Micro USB, so you’ll always have a way to top off. When you aren’t mobile the charging case doubles as a stand on your desktop to charge the headset and keep it on hand.

Use the Voyager 5200 Charging case for protection while traveling, or as a desktop stand.

In addition to using it for calls I also use this to listen to audiobooks. The callers sound great to me and the audiobooks also sound very good.

Plantronics includes sensors that know if the headphone is on your ear. This comes into play in several areas of use. When you answer a call on your phone, the audio is routed to the phone, unless you are wearing your headset. You can also pick the headset up when the phone is ringing and put it on to answer a call. When listening to something, you can take it off and the headset pauses your book or music.

There is a smart mute feature that lets you know when you press the mute button. This allows you to mute a call, and know you’ve muted the call, without taking your phone out of your pocket. Tapping it again will un-mute, and you get a voice confirmation with each push of the button.

Pick an earbud size that best fits your ear for a comfortable experience.

When not on a call, holding the red mute button will activate Siri or other voice control agents.

Volume up and down buttons are on the top of the phone and a button on the back of the boom alerts you to battery life, ends a call or redials the last number.

Plantronics includes three sizes for the earbud to ensure a good fit. The headphone is water resistant thanks to p2i nano coating that protects it from sweat, rain, fog and moisture.

At $119 the Plantronics Voyager 5200 is an amazing headset thanks to sensors, noise and wind reduction, easy access to muting and long battery life. The freedom of movement that you don’t get with those standard iPhone headphones cements the deal.
