This week’s Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 release is likely to be the most exciting thing that happens in games until March. Plants vs Zombies is a classic franchise, created by PopCap and adored by millions. The name of the game isn’t some joke, players really do use a dizzying array of weapons and power ups to become a zombie or a plant and battle each other for supremacy.

The third-person shooter is stuffed full of new maps for the two factions to fight over, new weapons to fight with and characters with special abilities never seen in the game before.

Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 launches on February 23rd. Here’s what you need to know ahead of its arrival.

Big lovers of video games won’t be surprised by this, but Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 is another game that those who don’t have the last harder won’t get to play. With the Xbox One and PS4 firmly established, Electronic Arts decided that it didn’t need a release for the game on earlier consoles. This means, that if you want to play Plants Vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 you’ll need either an Xbox One, Windows PC or Sony’s PS4 gaming console.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any console bundles that come with the game included, meaning you need to factor in the cost of both a new console and the game. New Xbox One and PS4 consoles cost as little as $349 right now. Trading in your old console could save you a bit on the upgrade. Video game retailer GameStop offers used consoles too.

The Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 release is the same day on both consoles and Windows PCs, but that doesn’t mean some gamers don’t have an advantage over others. Xbox One and Windows PC users can try the game right now, and it’s all because of a service called EA Access.

EA Access is a subscription service that gets users free game downloads and discounts on digital titles made and published by Electronic Arts. It costs $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year. More to the point, EA Access also gets users access to digital downloads of Electronic Arts’ games before their official releases arrive. Right now, Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 is available to play through EA Access right now. Players get 10 hours with the game ahead of release. When the final version arrives on February 23rd, they can buy it and keep the progress they made during that 10 hour trial.

What’s New in Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2

It’s all about territory control with Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2. The zombies won the last battle, giving them the opportunity to wipe out all of the plants in the game world. Seeking revenge, the plants are back to take back what’s theirs. The game features 12 different maps and 40 different characters.

Backyard Battleground acts as a central area for doing everything in the game. Just like in the beta, the hub contains trophies that players have collected and gives them access to the game’s missions. Herbal Assault puts 24 different plays into one battle to fight each other. Online isn’t the only way to play though. There’s a single player experience for every mission. What’s more, two gamers can be on the same system at the same time, something that most games ignore these days.

Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 Pre-Order Bonuses

The Xbox Store, PlayStation Store, GameStop and Origin all offer Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 pre-orders in disc and digital form now. As with most games, there’s a little something waiting for users that decide to take the plunge and buy the game before it’s available on Tuesday.

Additionally, Electronic Arts is throwing in digital copies of Peggle 2, a puzzle game just as beloved as Plants vs Zombies is. Those that want the game have until March 1st to take advantage of the extra download.

To be clear, it doesn’t matter where you place your pre-order, these extras are included. Electronic Arts doesn’t have special pre-order bonuses running for each retail outlet.

Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 Deluxe Edition

Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 only comes in two versions. The standard edition is just as its name suggests, buyers get a disc or digital copy of the base game and pre-order extras.

There’s a little more tucked into Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 Deluxe Edition. 200,000 Coins, an in-game currency used to pick up character power-ups, is included in this version. There are three packs of upgrades included with it too: the Phenomenal Character Pack, Zombie Class Custom Accessories Pack and the Plant Class Custom Accessories Pack. The latter two packs are available only to those that purchase Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 Deluxe Edition, Electronic Arts says.

Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 Deluxe Edition costs $69.99, $10 more than the base game.

Have fun hunting zombies in Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2. Remember, it’s not coming to the Xbox 360 or PS3. Also, you’ll need an internet connection to play the game, despite it having a single player experience.
