PS4 Release Date Leak: Too Late to Believe

Published

on

A new PS4 release date rumor points to a release in mid-December, two weeks after an Xbox One release date.

The latest rumor comes from the Toys R Us UK website which lists release dates for the Xbox One and PS4 in November and December 2013.

Microsoft and Sony announced their next generation consoles earlier this year, providing a holiday release date time-frame, but failing to list offer a specific date.

According to the Toys R Us webpage the PS4 release date is set for December 13th. While this would fit the holiday release timeline, it is hard to believe Sony would push the PS4 release date this late in December without a major delay in manufacturing.

The PS4 release date is not likely delayed until December 13th.

The PS4 release date is not likely delayed until December 13th.

Why December is Too Late for a PS4 Release

Microsoft is already planning an Xbox One release date in November, and it would make sense for Sony to meet or beat this date to take on the Xbox One as soon as possible to capture undecided buyers.

Waiting until December 13th would be a risky move for Sony even though the PS4 price is $100 cheaper than the Xbox One. The biggest drawback to this date is that it would not allow enough time to re-stock the PS4 significantly before Christmas in the U.S. While Sony could deliver additional stock, shortages would likely continue through the end of the year.

Another risk is that by the first week in December more than a third of Americans are already done with holiday shopping. If the Xbox One is out in November, Sony runs the risk of parents and shoppers buying the Xbox One over the PS4 in a hurry to finish holiday shopping.

It would also be an odd move to see the PS4 release date arrive after Black Friday. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, when retailers offer incredible discounts on gadgets and more. We don’t expect huge console deals, but we could see bundles that include expensive Xbox One and PS4 Accessories or games.

PS4 Release Date Details

Sony teased a PS4 release for early November, when the PlayStation Twitter account shared a photo of an eclipse with no additional commentary.

Update: The Eclipse was tied to Jak and Daxter, rather than the PS4 release date.

The next total solar eclipse is November 3rd. Another retailer in Amsterdam claimed the PS4 release date is set for November 13th, going so far as to print up in-store signs with the date. Other sources claims Sony shipped PS4 release date materials to their stores already, with the November 13th date.

Couple this with Microsoft’s plans for an Xbox One release date in November and it is very unlikely that Sony would allow the PS4 release date to fall this late into December. The Toys R Us website is likely using a placeholder date, like we see on Best Buy, Amazon and other retailers.
