How to Register More Than Five Fingers on iPhone 5s Touch ID

Published

on

One of the biggest new features of the iPhone 5s is the built-in fingerprint scanner in the Home button — also known as Touch ID. This allows users to scan their fingerprint rather than enter in their passcode every time they want to unlock their phone. It’s a nifty and convenient feature. However, Apple only allows you to scan up to five fingers.

This means that if you want both of your hands to be able to unlock your phone, you’ll have to sacrifice some of your fingers, meaning that they won’t be able to work with the fingerprint sensor. However, a loophole has been found that lets you register more than five fingers with Touch ID, and here’s how to do it.

iPhone 5s owner Note Suwanchote discovered the workaround and posted a video showing how to do it on YouTube (embedded below). It’s almost five minutes long, so if you don’t have time to watch the whole thing, scroll down get a quick primer on how the method works.

Touch ID on the iPhone 5s

How to Register More Than Five Fingers

Open up the Settings app and navigate to General > Passcode & Fingerprint > Fingerprints. If you already have five fingerprints registered, then you’ll need to delete one in order to add one for this tutorial. Tap on Add a fingerprint… to begin the process of adding a fingerprint to Touch ID’s database.

The process of adding a fingerprint involves resting a finger on the home button and lifting, doing that repeatedly. However, to register multiple fingers for “one finger” per se, alternative between fingers when you rest and lift up. Oddly enough, Touch ID doesn’t detect that you’re using different fingerprints for this, even though it’s going in with the assumption that you’re only using one finger for the setup.

You can setup two fingers to a finger, or even five fingers to a finger, like Suwanchote did, so it’s up to on how many fingers take up a single slot. You could have your left and right hands take up two slots, and leave the other three slots for close ones whom you trust, by scanning in their fingerprints, that way they can unlock your phone for whatever reason.

The Only Caveat

There’s really only one caveat that we see with this method. Touch ID makes you scan your finger multiple times at different angles so that it can more-accurately know what your fingerprint looks like. By using this workaround method, you’re decreasing the number of times that Touch ID scans each finger, meaning that the accuracy could go down, thus resulting in less accurate results when attempting to unlock your phone. It seemed to work fine for Suwanchote, but your mileage may vary depending on how you do it. Let us know how it works for you in the comments below!
