RIM Planning a “iPad Killer?”
I love the silliness of products that get labeled “________ killer.” I’ve seen very few products that kill off another one, instead I’ve seen many that try to leech onto a market that’s already been somewhat established. But then that’s no fun for headline writers. But then again, you can’t blame a company for trying to grab a share of a market wherein the leader has already sold a million units, and the company itself has an established base of customers.
In any regard, it looks like Research in Motion, has jumped into the Tablet pile and may be creating one of its own, according to this article on 9to5Mac. Sumocat mentioned it la few days ago in this post. Supposedly the RIM Tablet is codenamed BlackPad or Cobalt. 9to5Mac picked this up from Blackberry Leaks who swears its real and probably won’t happen until next year.
That’s right Tablet/Slate fans, we’re now heading into 2011 release promises and predictions.
So, Blackberry users, here’s a question for you. If RIM comes out with a Pad/Slate/Tablet, are you game?

Nope. Why should I. The article implies it’s similar to the iPad: for me totally useless.
I would buy such a sub slate, however, only if it has a pressure sensitive resistive touchscreen or an active digitizer, runs Windows 7 or (better and, so both simultaneously) a full ‘mobile’ OS like MeeGo with billions of real software support, and especially with a good program for note taking. Combine this with 10h battery life and an outdoor readable screen, set the price to something around $600 and I buy it immediately.

It’s funny that everything now days is labeled a killer after one of Apple’s products as if everything they make has a 90% market share. Shouldn’t the iPad be called, “the tablet killer” and the iPhone, “the Blackberry Killer” or “Palm Killer.” Etc. . . This stupidity is brought about by tech sites hyping Apple products for some strange reason. When those products gain a 90% share then we can start labeling things after them as a “killer” but not until then.
So, for the love of God please stop with the “killer” statements.

Would have to wait and see what it has to offer, but at this poiint I would be using my iPad, along with my Acer Ferarri netbook and my Kohjinsha SC3 tablet and for desktlop my Macbook Pro.

If the product is to follow the normal philosophy of RIM, it is not comparable to the ipad. RIM is, and will for the foreseeable future be, focused on the corporate environment, it a testament of their ingenuity and skill that their product are also widely used by consumers.
The tablet, or an equivalent, that RIM produces will most likely be targeted toward corporate users and as such will be more usefull than the ipad. So far the solutions RIM have come up with have been usefull and needed (e.g. BlackBerry Presenter and hopefully, soon to be available, Print-on-the-Go), so I guess they will think of something clever and practical :)
