Samsung Confirms Another Galaxy Note 2 KitKat Update for U.S.

Another Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat release has been confirmed for the United States though it’s still not clear when this new Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update will be touching down for users.

Many weeks ago, Samsung USA confirmed that it would be delivering a Android 4.4 KitKat update to the Galaxy Note 2. The company was mum on specifics but at the time, we believed that the roll out would include all versions of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 in the United States which includes variants on AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon.

In late April, Samsung started pushing out the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update to owners in France. Several weeks later, Sprint became the first carrier in the United States to offer the upgrade when it rolled out its version of the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update. Sprint is typically first to major Android upgrades so the timing did not come as much of a surprise.

Since then, the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat roll out in the United States has failed to produce another upgrade for Galaxy Note 2 owners. And while carriers remain silent about the future, Samsung is slyly letting Galaxy Note 2 owners know that the update is coming at some point down the road.

In late May, the AT&T Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update made an appearance on Samsung’s website ahead of its release. The appearance doesn’t confirm an imminent release but it does confirm Samsung’s plans to update the device with Google’s latest update.

Today, we’ve spotted another Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 update lurking on Samsung’s website. The appearance confirms yet another Galaxy Note 2 upgrade for the United States. The U.S. Cellular Galaxy Note 2 is now listed as running KitKat on its product page. The device is currently running Android 4.3.

This is big for owners on U.S. Cellular because it means that the Android 4.4 KitKat update will be coming at some point down the road. We’ve never seen an update listed on Samsung’s product pages ahead of time get cancelled so there is a very good chance that the U.S. Cellular Galaxy Note 2, like the Sprint Galaxy Note 2, will get Android 4.4.

The T-Mobile and Verizon Galaxy Note 2 still haven’t seen their updates confirmed but it’s clear that this roll out is going to touch all Galaxy Note 2 models in the United States. T-Mobile and Verizon typically don’t announce release dates ahead of time which means that users will likely be in the dark as we push closer to release.

Sprint’s Galaxy Note 2 roll out came well ahead of the curve. International carriers that keep their users in the loop have been targeting June for their Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat release though we’ve seen others like Optus push their ETAs back to July. Samsung’s Android update roll outs often take months to complete and we could see Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 upgrade pushing out deep into the summer months.

When the updates do arrive, they will likely mirror what Sprint put aboard its Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade. Sprint’s change log looks like this:

  • New Lock Screen Access
    • Media Controls – full-screen album art and media controls when listening to music
    • Camera Shortcut  – access the Camera application right from the lock screen
  • SMS App Chooser – select a default application for sending and receiving SMS text messages
  • Restyled Status and Navigation Bars – status and navigation bars are translucent and can sit on top of apps, along with simplified status bar icons
  • Consolidated Location Settings – location services are integrated and more detailed by new Location menu
  • Expanded Emoji Icons
  • Wireless Printing – supports printing over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • Prevention Information pop-up message is suppressed.
  • Samsung Knox 2.0

It’s not clear if the updates will be Android 4.4.2 KitKat or Android 4.4.3 KitKat. Android 4.4.3 KitKat is Google’s latest version of KitKat and an update that tackles a number of issues inside Android 4.4.2. The update has not been confirmed for the Galaxy Note 2 or any other Samsung smartphone.
