Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop Update Breakdown (January)

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update hasn’t arrived just yet but thanks to a flurry of details, we know that we’re closing in on a roll out. With that in mind, we want to take a look at what we know about the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update and its release as we kick off the new year.

Last summer, Google took the stage at its annual Google I/O developer conference to detail its latest Android operating system, an operating system that was once called Android L. In November, Google once again confirmed its Android L operating system only this time the company gave it a name, Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Android 5.0 Lollipop is one of Google’s biggest updates to the Android operating system and its an update that brings a number of big time features including the company’s new Material Design. These changes are massive for owners of Google’s Nexus smartphones and tablets and they’re going to be huge for owners of Samsung’s smartphones and tablets.

LG G3 vs Galaxy Note 3 - 4

Samsung is the world’s largest Android manufacturer and it’s responsible for devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the former Galaxy Note flagship that’s since been replaced by the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. The Galaxy Note 3 has not yet received its boost up to Android 5.0 Lollipop, it remains on Android 4.4 KitKat, but all signs point to a roll out in the coming weeks.

Over the past month or so, we’ve seen Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop update details emerge at breakneck pace and for those that don’t keep their finger on the pulse of the industry, the details can be hard to track. Today, we want to breakdown the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update and release as we offer a look at the update’s current status.

Galaxy Note 3 Android 5.0 Lollipop Update

The first thing that Samsung Galaxy Note 3 users need to know is that the Galaxy Note 3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update is confirmed for arrival. The device will officially be making the move up from Android 4.4.2 KitKat or Android 4.4.4 KitKat. This doesn’t come as too much of a surprise given that the Galaxy Note 3 is only a year old. Devices are typically updated for 18 months or longer.

That confirmation comes from Samsung itself and it also comes from several of its regional wings who have cemented the update’s arrival. The Galaxy Note 3 update is coming though we’re not entirely sure what version of Android 5.0 Lollipop Samsung and its carrier partners will be rolling out to users.

Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Galaxy Note 3 - 006-X2

Samsung is currently rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop to the Galaxy S5 though as we’ve learned, the company is working on Android 5.0.1 Lollipop behind the scenes. Android 5.0.1 Lollipop is a bug fixer for Android 5.0 problems and it’s not surprising to see the company looking to move to a newer and more stable version of the software. Problem is, we haven’t heard anything in regard to the Galaxy Note 3.

We’ve seen several Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop leaks including one that led to an extremely detailed preview ahead of its release but we simply don’t know what Samsung has in store for Samsung Galaxy Note 3 users. At this point, we’re learning toward Android 5.0.1 given that it’s in the works for the Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge. It would be strange to see the Galaxy Note 3 bogged down by an older version.

Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop Update Release Date

Samsung’s confirmed the Galaxy Note 3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update for early 2015 though it did not outline a specific date. Unlike the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy S5 Lollipop updates, we haven’t heard much about the timing for the Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop release. We did recently discovered one clue that sheds some light on a potential timeline and here’s what we found.

Samsung Denmark claims that the Galaxy Note Edge, Galaxy S5 Active, Galaxy S5 Mini, Galaxy Alpha, and Galaxy Note 2 will all be getting Android 5.0 Lollipop updates. However, it specifically says that those updates won’t be arriving until “later in 2015.” It does not attach the “later in 2015” time frame to the Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy S5, Galaxy S4, or Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop updates. In other words, those four could be among the first four to arrive.

This doesn’t narrow it down to a specific window but it does hint at the pecking order. Samsung usually rolls out major Android updates to its flagship models first before moving on to lesser and older devices.

U.S. Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop Update

The United States is a key battleground for Samsung and it often finds itself among the first regions to major Samsung Galaxy Android updates. Nothing is confirmed for the U.S. just yet but a leak should instill some confidence in Galaxy Note 3 users.

At the tail end of last year, a credible Samsung Mobile retail store employee revealed a number of new Lollipop details on Reddit and they included details about Samsung’s plans for the United States. His intelligence indicates that Samsung is planning to push the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop updates in early January and that they will be followed by the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 Android 5.0 Lollipop updates.

It’s not clear where those updates might fall in but it’s another sign that Samsung is looking to focus in on its key devices first and other less popular devices after. Translation: The Galaxy Note 3 will almost certainly be among the first Galaxy devices to Android 5.0 Lollipop in the United States and in other regions around the world.

Now, we just have to sit back and hope that Samsung’s testing goes according to plan. Everything depends on the testing process and the testing process can be extremely unpredictable.

I received this update over Mother’s Day Weekend and it is draining my extended life battery like if I was using it non stop. Over night I started with 97% and by morning it was at 49%. I made sure I closed all my programs before I went to bed. This Sucks. My battery before the update would last me 40-48 hours of use. Down time would be while I was sleeping. Please help!
