Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.2 Update May Add Smart Scroll

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy S3 will likely get some of the new smart Samsung Galaxy S4 features like Smart scroll and Smart pause if screenshots from a leaked update are to be believed.

New claimed screenshots from a leaked Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.2.1 update show a collection of the new Samsung smart features which Samsung will likely announce on stage with the Samsung Galaxy S4 on March 14th.

The Samsung Smart scroll feature is all but confirmed for the Samsung Galaxy S4 with insiders sharing screenshots and sources telling the NY Times that it’s a done deal.

A set of screenshots posted on SamMobile which originally appeared to be from the Samsung Galaxy S4, are reportedly taken from the Samsung Galaxy S3 with a leaked Android 4.2.1 update installed.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.2 update leaked on XDA in late February. It is not clear if this is the same build, though both carry the Android 4.1.2 version number.

Claimed Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.2 update screenshots show off Smart scroll and Smart pause features we expect on the Samsung GalaxY S4.

The screenshots show more details about the Smart scroll feature and the accompanying Smart pause feature. Smart scroll allows users to scroll on the screen with their eyes and face. Smart pause can pause a video if the phone detects a user looks away.

Based on these screenshots the Smart scroll feature on the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy S4 will allow users to scroll in a range of applications. The ability to select specific applications to use with Smart scroll may mean not all applications can support it, which could force users to touch the screen to scroll in their favorite Android Twitter app.

In the screenshot we see support for Samsung’s built-in Internet browser as well as Chrome, which is a good sign. We also see support for smart scroll in Gmail. This is another good sign as many of the best Samsung features end up restricted to Samsung apps, instead of the default Google apps.

The screenshots also show a way of adjusting the speed of the scrolling in the settings. The motion sensor and or camera can also use vertical head movements to figure out how fast to scroll.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is already receiving an Android 4.1.2 update on many carriers in the U.S. and on international models. The Android 4.1.2 update on Verizon came without the Premium Suite, which means no Multi-Window View. It’s not clear if that feature will make an appearance on the Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.2 update in the U.S.

If the Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.2 update will bring these new smart features, expect an announcement on March 14th with the Samsung Galaxy S4, that confirms the update. Samsung may not announce specific timing for U.S. Galaxy S3 variants, but we may hear a timeline for rolling out the update to international models.

How long will Samsung continue to support the Galaxy s3? Will it get Key Lime Pie or is that information not available? I’ve read that they stop supporting devices 18 mos after product launch. If that’s the case then 4.2 looks to be the last update for them.

Galaxy S2 is still receiving 4.1.2 update even though it has bypass the 18 months cycle

If you root your phone you can potentially keep upgrading as long as the hardware supports it. Have a look on XDA

Samsung may continue to support the S3 even after the S4 is released, and I’m guessing they will given the popularity of the S3 and numbers sold (not good business sense to piss off your loyal customer/fan base). But even if they do it still comes down to the carriers releasing updates, unless of course you’re rooted. The problem is that carriers won’t be as driven as Samsung is to continue supporting their devices
