This Rumor Will Frustrate Many Samsung Galaxy S5 Buyers

Published

Rumors of a high-end Samsung Galaxy S5 “Prime” release simply will not die and today, new rumors point to a possible release in June, just a few weeks after the Samsung Galaxy S5 release.

Prior to the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S5 in February, the rumor mill was filled with tales of a high-end Galaxy S5 with a QHD display, speedy processor that was perhaps 64-bit and a design that featured metal elements rather than the usual plastic ones that have arrived on Samsung’s previous Galaxy S smartphones.

On stage in Barcelona, Spain at its Unpacked 5 launch event, Samsung debuted several new devices but a high-end metal Galaxy S5 with a QHD display and 64-bit processor was not one of them. Instead, the company showcased a brand new Galaxy S5 with a full HD display, 32-bit Snapdragon 801 processor, and a design that while dust and water resistant, is made out of plastic.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 release arrived on April 14th in countries around the world including in the United States where the device debuted on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon. Despite the worldwide release of the Samsung Galaxy S5, rumors of a high-end Galaxy S5 “Prime” simply will not die, even after Samsung’s CEO splashed water on the fire.

In March, Samsung’s CEO said that the company was not working on a premium version of the Samsung Galaxy S5. However, since that day, we’ve seen a number of rumors and even bits of evidence point to an upcoming high-end smartphone that will offer high-powered specifications that aren’t found on the current Galaxy S5.

Today, those rumors have ignited in a big way thanks to a new report and thanks to Samsung itself. According to AsiaToday, Samsung is indeed working on a premium version of the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the device could land on shelves sometime in and around the month of June. Rumors suggested that the high-end QHD version would arrive several months after the initial release and this lines up with those rumors.

Samsung has also used June as a launch month in the past. Last year, Samsung introduced a number of new devices, including the Galaxy S4 mini, at a launch event in London in June. The event served as a bridge between the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S4, which took place in March, and the launch of the Galaxy Note 3 which took place in early September.

The site claims that the device in question will feature a QHD display and that the device won’t be limited in scope and will arrive to target the premium market in the United States and in Europe. It does not single out any carriers.

A recent benchmark helped to ignite the rumors and today, the model number shown in that benchmark emerged in a shipping manifest. The SM-G906 is apparently on its way out of Korea for R&D (Research and Development) purposes.

Here is what this “Galaxy S5 Prime” is thought to have on board:

  • 5.2-inch Display with 2560×1440 QHD Resolution
  • Android 4.4 KitKat
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 16MP Rear Camera/2MP Front Camera
  • 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 Quad-Core Processor

While the Samsung Galaxy S5’s display is considered to be one of the best on the market, a display with QHD resolution would offer even sharper looking content.

Galaxy S5 “Prime” rumors haven’t discussed a design though again, we heard that the high-end Galaxy S5 would sport a metal design to complement its high-end features. There were also those that believed it would come in plastic, just like the other version. Samsung typically keeps its designs under wraps until its launch events so it’s possible that this design will remain in the shadows until its arrival.

If that wasn’t enough, the Samsung SM-G906S model number today appeared in official Samsung documents for a service called Find My Mobile. The service lists the unreleased SM-G906S as a Samsung Galaxy S5 variant which fuels rumors that suggest that this high-end premium smartphone is, in fact, a Samsung Galaxy S5 variant.

If and when a premium Samsung Galaxy S5 arrives, it has the potential to frustrate consumers who bought into the current Samsung Galaxy S5 thinking that it would be Samsung’s flagship premium Galaxy S option in 2014. The Samsung Galaxy S5 is a premium smartphone but this “Prime” version appears to be equipped with firepower that it just simply doesn’t have.

While we wait for Samsung to confirm these rumors, it looks like prospective Galaxy S5 buyers will have another device to contend with. Samsung is expected to debut a new Galaxy smartphone tomorrow and thanks to teasers, it looks like it will be the Samsung Galaxy K and not the Galaxy S5 Prime.

The Samsung Galaxy K is expected to be a replacement for last year’s Galaxy S4 Zoom. The new Galaxy K is expected to have a 4.8-inch 720p Super AMOLED display, hexa-core processor and a 20MP rear camera  that comes with a 10x optical zoom and Xenon flash.

It makes me mad how they keep getting the screen bigger. Just wait next year with the 5.3 to a 5.4 and the year after 5.6 to a 5.7 screen as the note 3…..
