Samsung Galaxy S5 Details Explode Ahead of Launch

Published

Samsung Galaxy S5 rumors continue to emerge ahead of the device’s rumored launch date as the latest Galaxy S5 details not only go into detail about the device’s fingerprint reader but also point to a high-resolution display and a widespread release that should reach not only carriers but retailers as well.

Rumors continue to attempt to expose the Samsung Galaxy S5 ahead of its launch date, rumored to be February 24th at the company’s Unpacked 5 Episode 1 event in Barcelona, Spain. The latest collection of Galaxy S5 details shed some light on the device’s features but also point to another big release.

In the buildup to the Galaxy S5’s arrival, rumors have suggested that Samsung ditched Iris-scanning technology in favor of a fingerprint reader for added security and convenience. The feature is thought to be a competitor for Apple’s Touch ID feature found within the iPhone 5s. A new SamMobile report all but confirms the existence of such a fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy S5 as it attempt to explain all of the key details surrounding the brand new Galaxy S feature.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Features - 8

The site claims that the fingerprint reader will not be embedded underneath the display as rumors have suggested but it will instead be embedded inside the home button, just like the fingerprint sensor on the iPhone 5s. The site claims that the device will again use a physical home button, lending credibility to a 3D model that surfaced last week, depicting a possible Galaxy S5 with a home button.

A report from The Korea Herald suggested that Samsung would ditch the home button and use a bezel-free display and on-screen buttons instead. Previous Galaxy S models have all used a physical home button for navigation.

The fingerprint reader will evidently be receptive to swipes across the button itself. Here is how the site describes the process of unlocking the Galaxy S5 using a fingerprint:

The sensor itself works in a swipe manner, which means that you would need to swipe the entire pad of your finger, from base to tip, across the home key to register your fingerprint properly. Also, you would need to keep your finger flat against the home key and swipe at a moderate speed or else it won’t recognise your fingerprint. The fingerprint sensor is sensitive to moisture, as well.

It appears that the feature extends across the Galaxy S5’s software and that users can register up to eight fingerprints for use with specific applications. A new Personal Folder and Private Mode will apparently accompany the feature, adding more privacy to the Galaxy S5 home screen and beyond.

A high-resolution 2560 x 1440 resolution display could be a flagship feature.

A high-resolution 2560 x 1440 resolution display could be a flagship feature.

In addition to these details, Samsung Galaxy S5 Abonnement leaked what it claims is yet another benchmark for the Samsung Galaxy S5. The benchmark points to a 5.2-inch display, a size that Galaxy S5 rumors have all pointed to, and a display that offers 2K resolution, also known as 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution.

Galaxy S5 rumors have been back and forth about the inclusion of a QHD display with a recent New York Times report claiming that the Galaxy S5 would stick to full HD 1080p and full HD only. Rumors have also pointed to two possible Galaxy S5 models with at least one touting a 1080p display as opposed to a QHD display. Benchmarks can be faked though we typically do see high-end devices emerge in benchmarks ahead of launch.

Finally Galaxy Club, a Dutch publication, discovered a Galaxy S5 listing through retailer Typhone.nl. The listing is for a Samsung Galaxy S5 though at the moment, it’s light on details. The retailer recently claimed that the highlights of the device would be a 5.2-inch 1080 display and a 16MP camera though it has since pulled those specifications down.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Video Rumor Roundup - 004

It appears that the retailer has been tracking Galaxy S5 rumors on this page in an attempt to bring publicity to its listing so it’s possible that the previously listed information was based on rumors and not inside knowledge.

At the very least, the fact that the retailer has a Galaxy S5 live and active is a sign that retailers, like Samsung and its carrier partners, are preparing for the device’s release. Galaxy S devices typically find themselves on the shelves of many third-party retailers and this listing is a sign that points to the Galaxy S5 following in the footsteps of its predecessors.

With a Samsung Galaxy S5 launch likely only days away, consumers should have their official answers soon. For now though, the Galaxy S5, its display and its release date remain in flux.

Swipe sensor? Most people won’t use it then. The point of the sensor on the iPhone is that you just use the home button like you did before. Press it and in a quarter second it scans and unlocks. I don’t want to have to swipe to unlock my phone.
