Samsung Galaxy S5 vs. Galaxy S4: Reasons to Buy the Galaxy S4

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy S5 will replace the Galaxy S4 as Samsung’s flagship smartphone in April. And while the Galaxy S4 will get replaced as the company’s most visible smartphone, it will not get replaced completely. In fact, there are a few reasons why some consumers might want to consider buying it over the Galaxy S5.

Samsung built the Galaxy S4 to last. This is evident in the fact that the Galaxy S4 is still considered to be one of the best smartphones on the market, almost a year after it was released onto shelves. With a Samsung Galaxy S5 on the way, the Galaxy S4’s stature will certainly take a hit though it will remain an option for those that don’t fall in love with the Galaxy S5 and still want a Galaxy smartphone.

Those in the hunt for a new device will certainly want to have their eye on the Samsung Galaxy S5. It’s a powerful device and it trumps the Galaxy S4 in tons of different ways. Many consider the Galaxy S5 to be an incremental upgrade over the Galaxy S4 but as we have pointed out, there are a lot of things to like about the new Galaxy S.

Yesterday, we took a look at eight reasons consumers should consider buying the Galaxy S5 over the Galaxy S4. Today, we’re going to switch gears and take a look at some reasons why consumers might want to opt for last year’s model.

Price

There are only a few reasons why consumers might want to buy the Samsung Galaxy S4 over the Samsung Galaxy S5. In fact, there is really one key reason why consumers might be intrigued by the Galaxy S4. That reason? Price.

We still don’t know how much the Samsung Galaxy S5 is going to cost. We will likely learn about the price once we get closer to April 11th, the presumed release date in the United States. For now, the price remains a mystery.

A Bloomberg report suggests that Samsung might consider dropping the usual starting price of $199.99 but that remains unconfirmed. From what we do know about the price, it sure seems like things will stay the same. Information gathered prior to the device’s release points to an off-contract price around $600. That’s standard.

Galaxy S5 Release

We’ve also seen TELUS, a carrier in Canada, suggest that it’s targeting a $250 price tag on a two-year contract. That’s a familiar price point for Samsung’s Galaxy S. In other words, we could see the Galaxy S5 arrive, starting at $199.99 on-contract.

Whatever the case may be, the Galaxy S5 is going to be more expensive than the Galaxy S4. Whether it’s $199.99, $150 or something else, it will be more expensive.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 started at $199.99 but its price has dropped considerably over the course of a year. Carriers like AT&T and Verizon are still charging $199.99 but retailers like Amazon offer big time deals on the Galaxy S4. And once the Galaxy S5 arrives, we expect those deals to get even better.

Those not looking to spend an arm and a leg on or off-contract will probably find the Galaxy S4 to be the more attractive of the two. It will be the more affordable option from here on out and to us, that is probably the biggest reason why some people might want to opt for the older Galaxy S model.

Still Has Solid Specs

There are some other reasons why one might consider buying the Galaxy S4 over the Galaxy S5. While the Galaxy S5 hardware bests the Galaxy S4 hardware in some areas, the Galaxy S4 is in possession of some serious hardware. Remember what we said about Samsung building this device to withstand the tests of time.

The Galaxy S4 features a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor that features an Adreno 320 graphics chip. These are going to be perfectly fine for most users. They handle Samsung’s TouchWiz software, games, and applications extremely well.

Last year’s Galaxy S comes with a 5-inch display, slightly smaller than the Galaxy S5’s 5.1-inch display. However ,it features the same 1080p resolution that comes on the Galaxy S5. Content looks impressive on both screens.

Samsung Galaxy S5 HERO

Samsung introduced some improvements to the Galaxy S camera. The Galaxy S5 comes with a 16MP camera that offers fast auto-focus and improved HDR. And while those are certainly key upgrades, the Galaxy S4’s camera is extremely solid and should offer images and video comparable to the Galaxy S5. Yes, the Galaxy S5 records 4K video but most people don’t have 4K displays so it doesn’t really matter.

The Galaxy S4 comes in 16GB and 32GB form. So does the Galaxy S5. The Galaxy S4 comes with a removable back for use with an extended battery and a microSD slot that can handle 128GB cards, just like the Galaxy S5.

The point is, the Galaxy S4 is still an extremely solid smartphone that offers many of the same perks that the Galaxy S5 does. Those who aren’t power users and don’t need the latest and greatest specifications will be fine with the Galaxy S4.

Still Has Life Left

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is a year old but it still has some life left ahead of it. Samsung typically keeps devices updated for two years before killing off support. This means two things for the Galaxy S4.

One, it should get all of the major Android updates that roll out this year. That potentially means two major Android upgrades after Android 4.4 KitKat. More importantly, it means that there is a very good chance that it will get some of the Galaxy S5’s software features.

Samsung’s major Android updates typically bring new software features to older devices. The Galaxy S5 debuted with a ton of new software and while Samsung hasn’t confirmed anything, history suggests that it will bring at least some of these features to the Galaxy S4.

Samsung typically picks a few of the best features to bestow upon its older devices so there is a good chance that some of the Galaxy S5’s best features will come to the Galaxy S4.

While the Galaxy S5’s software features are certainly intriguing, there are plenty of people that probably won’t need them. And Galaxy S4 users who later on decide that they do want these new features will probably be able to get at least some of them through the use of ROMs. That’s the beauty of Android.

Price is obviously the biggest reason to skip the Galaxy S5 but those that may not need or simply aren’t interested in the latest and greatest hardware specs and software will certainly find a solid buy in the Galaxy S4.
