Samsung Plots Foldable Display after Galaxy S5

Published

on

Foldable displays likely won’t come on board the Samsung Galaxy S5 or the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 though it appears that Samsung is plotting their arrival in 2015 which means that there is a chance that the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy Note 5 could both come with the technology on board.

While Galaxy S5 concepts have included foldable displays, the real Samsung Galaxy S5 is expected to touch down in a few weeks with a brand new 5.2-inch QHD display with high resolution and a whopping number of pixels-per-inch.The display isn’t expected to be derived from the company’s Samsung Youm technology.

Samsung has said that it’s considering a three-sided display for the Galaxy Note 4 which would allow for users to view the display at different angles. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 isn’t expected to arrive until much later this year, likely in the fall at IFA in Berlin, Germany.

It’s clear that the three-sided display is next in Samsung’s arsenal but it appears that the company is already hard at work on the future of its smartphone displays.

According to ETNews, the company was showing off a paper thin, 5.68-inch foldable high-res AMOLED display in Las Vegas at CES 2014. The display was shown off in private and wasn’t announced at the show or shown off on the show floor.

The company is reportedly looking to install this foldable technology on its smartphones in 2015 though that is clearly not set in stone. The foldable display that was shown off in Las Vegas apparently was just a prototype.

Even so, the existence of such a display at that size means that there is a chance that 2015 Galaxy S and Galaxy Note, presumably called Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5, could have a foldable display on board. Given Samsung’s timing, the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 appear to be out of the running.

While the display might not be coming out in 2014, it does hint at a future and it’s one that should look pretty bright to smartphone enthusiasts and those who want a large display without the large design.

I’ll take a plastic case anytime so long as I can change the battery. Plus phones are always in a 3rd party protective case, so who cares really. Happy with my 2 spare batteries for $20 each : )

I was an iphone person since day one, but I now love my Samsung Note 3~ So much nicer than iPhone, Apple is so tight with their products…
no swipe, no flash, in fact if you want to “modify” it at all you need to jailbreak it.
