Samsung Preemptively Removes Universal Search on Verizon Galaxy S III

Published

on

Following announcements that Samsung would remove the Universal Search feature on the AT&T and Sprint Galaxy S III models, Samsung confirms that the same software update will be deployed to Galaxy S III smartphones on Verizon’s 4G LTE network to remove the same feature. The feature was being removed on various iterations of the Galaxy S III in the U.S. preemptively to avoid a lawsuit with Apple, Inc. as the Galaxy Nexus saw itself with a temporary ban after Samsung had lost a patent infringement suit with Apple over the search feature.

Samsung says that it is removing this feature from U.S. Galaxy S III models to avoid any unnecessary disputes in the future and that it is not compelled by court order to do so on this particular model, according to a report by Brief Mobile

Universal Search is a feature that allows users to search and display results matching both the content on their phones as well as from the web through Google. With the new software update that will be deployed to Verizon’s Galaxy S III, users won’t be able to display search results that match the content on their phones and instead the function will only display search results from the web.

I personally never used the search to find things on my phone. So I wouldn’t miss that function.

This search feature is a huge time saver. I have mine set to search my contacts, calendar and data on my phone before the web. Many of the answers I am looking for reside on my phone. A fix is available. I believe the link to the fix is somewhere on this very site.
