Samsung Prepping a Slate PC

Published

on

Samsung was one of the companies that went whole hog into the original UMPC scene and actually gave it a valiant effort. They’ve also come up with some of the most solid Netbooks since that scene exploded. Now it looks like Samsung is going to jump on the Tablet/Slate bandwagon.

According to a report at APC, Samsung is looking for a late 2010 release of a Tablet/Slate that will have a PC powered processor. No word on what that processor might be, but it sounds like Samsung isn’t looking at its creation as a device to replace current devices, not as an additional device. In a statement from Samsung’s Philip Newton he says:

“The problems I see with the iPad are its processing power and (lack of) connectivity to a certain extent. I do feel that that slate-type platform has legs but I think the legs need to be far more powerful, for example an Atom-based product which has far greater flexibility, not to mention inputs and outputs. This has more potential than an iPad.”

Another Samsung exec had this to say:

“But there is the ability for a slate-based product to become a primary device in terms of its processing power and IO. That’s where I think we could get critical mass in having a product which could become your primary device – one you could take to university and do a PowerPoint presentation on it, for example, or a device that could be taken home or to the office and docked.”

Well, add another one to the list to keep an eye on.

So unlike the Q1 which was upgraded to an Intel Core Solo processor and, as Project Origami indicated, was intended for games and music, Samsung is now going to make a slate that is powerful and consumer-oriented. Great idea. No logical fallacies here.

The Samsung guys sound like they understand that a slate is great while mobile, but a well powered slate is a great brain for a desktop dock setup. This was the vision that the Motion LS800 aimed for, but with current technology one can do it better. Hopefully they will offer a model small enough to be carried in a jacket pocket; if so it sounds like my next computer.

Did Samsung make mention of its resistive touch too? To me, that’s going to hold back any slate design. A great slate needs more than a resistive digitizer. Is an active/capacitive digitizer good enough? Possibly. The new Wacom digitizers seem to still be king here–like the large screen Wacom unit shown on today’s (day 2) MIX10 keynote. The Tablet PC market still has room to catch up.

Hopefully they will offer a MORE THAN ONE MOdel. One small enough to be carried in a jacket pocket; one LARGE ENOUGH to be a production computer for inking cad drawings, art wark, etc. 12-inch – good, 14-inch better. A 14-inch sounds like my next computer.

I have been dreaming to a 7-inch UMPC to get an appended HDMI / DVI input port, and it should be able to serve as a mobile monitor, then it can be used for outdoor. (a mini HDMI input port is in UMPC, but the cable extension connects to switch a DVI connecter). Its computing system can be suspended that during a mobile monitor mode running. Battery will obtain the more time at the run of the monitor.

Today, the more cameras or videocameras or portable media players have a HDMI output port.
