Samsung Rugby Smart is AT&T’s New $99 Durable 4G Smartphone

Durability is a common complaint about smartphones. Sometimes one simple drop will crack the screen, or a spilled cup of coffee can render the phone completely useless.

For those who are afraid of breaking their phone, whether accidentally or just as a result of an active lifestyle Samsung has created the durable Rugby Smart.

AT&T’s Samsung Rugby Smart is a 3.7-inch Android smartphone designed to take a beating. It’s built to military spec so it can withstand the elements.

The Rugby Smart can be submerged in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes and still come out working, so there should be no worries about spills or rain. It can even withstand falling into a puddle. There’s no stats on how high you can drop it from, though waist-high shouldn’t be any problem at all.

Of course, as a durable device it can also withstand extreme temperatures and is dust-proof, so you can take it anywhere from the beach to the mountains.

You can see the Samsung Rugby Smart take a beating in the video below where it is dunked in water, covered in dirt and sand and taking drops from the hip.

In terms of specs, you’re getting a standard mid-range Android smartphone. The 3.7-inch screen is WVGA (800×480 resolution)Super AMOLED, and the rear-facing camera is 5MP with flash that can record 720p video. Of course it ships with Android 2.3 with no mention of Ice Cream Sandwich. It runs on AT&T’s HSPA+ network, so there’s no battery draining 4G LTE. Then again, the draw here really isn’t to be the latest and greatest, it’s to have a phone that won’t break easily.

The Samsung Rugby Smart is AT&T’s answer to Verizon’s Casio G’zOne Commando, and will be available on March 4. On that end it seems to be a fairly similar phone, although the Rugby Smart does have a simple design. Of course neither phone is truly indestructible, but you would have to try to break these phones.

These are phones that don’t require an extra case just to seem durable, which is great. Not having to buy a case saves you from the torment of having to choose from the nearly limitless case varieties that exist for less durable phones like the iPhone 4S.

You can buy the Samsung Rugby Smart for $99 on March 4th at your Local AT&T store.
