Remotely Disable a ThinkPad With a Text Message
Lenovo has added a new feature to their ThinkPads that allow it to be remotedly disabled in the event that the laptop / tablet pc becomes stolen – simply by sending a text message to WWAN phone number for the laptop. As an IT admin, yeah, that’s pretty awesome. What I want to know is if the WWAN card can then be made to send its location back to the carrier so the user can track it.

how i have been waiting for this feature(taking my hat off for the engineers at lenovo).
i have seen similar function in home security devices and electric wiring control thingies(common in europe) where you can text the device and make it do some pre-programmed tasks.
Like GoodThings2Life suggest: the implementation of location awareness is the next logical step, e.g. the computer sends a message with latitude and longitude or a link to google maps(or similar applications).
I waiting with my fingers crossed and hoping that this feature is software activated – via a bios update – so that x200t is also covered(hint hint :D).

That’s a really nice feature. I love having Sprite Terminator on my phone, it’s a give a great amount of piece of mind. If my phone is ever lost or stolen, I just have to borrow a phone from anyone nearby and can lock and/or wipe it to ensure my data is safe. You can then even track it’s location via gps to help aid in recovery.
I almost never leave my computer in an unlocked state when I’m not using it, but this would still provide that reassurance that should something happen that I don’t have to worry about my data being vulnerable.
