Should You Buy an Apple Watch?

Published

The Apple Watch is seeing some great sales right now, but should you buy an Apple Watch?

If you’ve been holding off on buying the Apple Watch until they go on sale, you’re about to be rewarded, as you can get an Apple Watch for up to $100 off during Black Friday this week.

Despite the deals, you’ll still be spending at least $250 to get an Apple Watch, so it’s certainly not an impulse purchase that you’ll be making, but if you’ve been wanting to get an Apple Watch for a while, now is the time to buy for sure.

However, an important question to ask yourself is whether you should buy an Apple Watch or not. Of course, no one needs an Apple Watch, but some users can find it useful while others don’t. Experiences have been rather polarizing since the device’s release back in April: you either like it or you don’t. There have been a handful of users in the /r/AppleWatch subreddit on Reddit who have stated that while the Apple Watch is cool and all, it’s just not as useful as they would have hoped.

It’s certainly different than a smartphone, where you kind of need some sort of phone to carry around and pretty much everyone who has one deems it a very useful device, but the Apple Watch is different. It’s an extension of your iPhone, so to speak, so it’s certainly not something that you absolutely need or even would want, depending on your preferences.

Should you buy an Apple Watch?

On more than one occasion, I’ve heard stories about buyers getting an Apple Watch and being really excited to try it out, only to find out a month or so later that the smartwatch doesn’t really do much for them.

Why is this? It could be any number of things, depending on the user, but some users that I’ve talked to said that they’ve never worn watches before and maybe thought the Apple Watch would change that, but it really didn’t.

Others say that they simply don’t use mobile technology enough to really take advantage of the Apple Watch. For instance, some users heavily rely on their iPhone every day and are in contact with a lot of people, which can make the Apple Watch incredibly useful. However, other users simply don’t use their iPhones all that much during the day, which means they don’t use their Apple Watch a lot. With that said, it wasn’t worth spending a few hundred dollars on something that wouldn’t get used that often.

I’m kind of in the same boat there. I really don’t use my iPhone that much and I don’t talk or text a lot of people throughout the day, and even if I did, I’m usually on my MacBook anyway, so I can do a lot of things on my MacBook that I can do on my iPhone, including text messaging, which I do the most of.

Of course, it’s worth mentioning the flaws of the Apple Watch. It’s a first-generation product, so it isn’t perfect by any means. Third-party apps are pretty much useless on the Apple Watch, as they take forever to load, which is enough time to pull out your iPhone anyway and access the app on there.

Furthermore, Siri has a few bugs in her that causes some problems every now and then. You can fix these problems temporarily, but they won’t be gone for good until Apple updates watchOS and improves the overall performance.

The Apple Watch is a decent first-generation product, certainly better than most first-generation products I’d say, but it has its flaws that will likely be worked out either on the next big software update or on the next-generation Apple Watch.

The Bottom Line

So, should you buy an Apple Watch? There’s really no harm in buying one, trying it out, and then returning or selling it if you don’t like it (although you may lose a bit of money in the process), but if you’re thinking about buying one and aren’t sure what to decide, here are a couple of things you should know.

Apple-watch-1

If you’ve never worn watches and don’t really have the need to wear one, that can be a pretty good indicator of whether or not you should buy an Apple Watch. A watch itself is convenient to wear, since you can quickly and easily just look at the time whenever you need it, and those kinds of users would benefit greatly from an Apple Watch by essentially adding on features to the watch they already wear in a way.

However, if you don’t normally wear a watch and just don’t see the point in one as far as your wants or needs are concerned, you probably won’t get a lot out of the Apple Watch.

Of course, I could be wrong. If you’re not usually a watch wearer, you could love the Apple Watch and vice versa, but I personally feel that if you don’t wear a watch already, smartwatches in general probably won’t appeal to you in the long run.

Answer Calls on the Apple Watch

Answer Calls on the Apple Watch

You can answer a call on your Apple Watch using it as a small Bluetooth speakerphone. You only want to use this for shorter calls because the audio quality isn't as good as when you are talking on speakerphone on your iPhone.

The Apple Watch only allows you to answer your calls on Speakerphone, so you won't want to use this all the time. It is very handy when you are working on a project or busy with your hands. Definitely be conscious of where you are taking calls. If you wouldn't talk on speakerphone, you shouldn't talk on your Apple Watch.

If you buy the new Apple Watch with LTE, you can even make calls on the Apple Watch without your iPhone nearby. This requires adding the watch to your plan for $10 a month. You cannot answer a FaceTime video call on the Apple Watch.
